I love how the flowers are growing towards the sun
I've never been a gardener. I once killed a cactus. A cactus, people! They survive just fine in the desert, but oh no, one week at my house is too much. So this week's makeover is a gardening triumph (insert own horn, toot it), not just for me, but for my lovely boyfriend Mike.
Back in May, Vanessa and I were happy to take a trek to wine country for the President's Choice Lawn & Garden Event to tour the greenhouses where PC gets their flowers, herbs and plants. At the end of the day we got to take home as much as we could carry. Enter Mike with a car. You see, we had just moved into an ground-floor apartment with a sunshine-y, 8x8 plot of weeds, old cardboard and general muck, with the dream of growing pretty things to look at and healthy things to eat. And we did it!
It's an amazing feeling to eat things you've grown. Bottom, right: Our first tomato as salad
I have to credit Mike with digging out the crazy growth that existed before, as you'll see in the gallery below. He worked hard for days -- I did not. And for you real gardeners, our tomatoes have gotten a bit out of hand and need better stakes, we know. We're going to stake them properly and the strawberries, too.
