Holiday Decor to Match Your Home

Anyone with a love for design has at one point balked at the red-and-green Christmas palette. Of course it’s audacious to publicly questions tradition, but the truth of the matter is, we’ve been flirting with holiday colour combos that span the colour wheel, for decades! Let’s be real: certain colour schemes work better with certain interiors --one palette does not fit all.

Here, some ideas on how to match your home with the colour scheme that best suits your decor.

Modern, Clean Lines: Bright and Monochromatic

If you’re a minimalist who hones clean surfaces all year round, this is your time to overlay some drama. Choose a bright, non-traditional colour like hot pink, and stick to it in different hues. Puncture your greige with a few statement-making, glamorous pieces in shades of your chosen colour – a wreath, a sparkly mantel display, a sprinkling of bows – but keep it bright! It’s the one time of the year you can decorate outside of the box.

Contemporary: Red and Sparkly

A contemporary home is characterized by an easy, neutral aesthetic with wide appeal. A look that’s based in tradition, with updated details to bring it more inline with today’s trends. A contemporary classic, if  you will, and no colour says contemporary classic like red.

Red is a colour of easy confidence, a stand-alone looker that needs no compliment. The only thing that a red colour scheme can benefit from is a bit of sparkle. So if you are the proud owner of a contemporary interior, your decorating task is quite easy this year.

The New Romantic: Turquoise, Orange and Green

Does your home have curves and frills, and swimming florals and pastels? Are you a fan of humpback sofas and nailhead trim? Play around with aqua, orange and a verdant green. Together, these colours are as pleasant and plush as can be – and look especially fetching if it’s a white Christmas!

If you’ve got the savvy to master the “eclectic mix”, then the colour wheel is your oyster! In all three of these examples, the home owner has chose one colour that either picks up on the exiting scheme, or adds a new one to the mix. This look may not be for everyone, but it sure is fun!
