Room from Debbie Travis's Facelift
The word 'theme' sends a signal to the hairs on the back of my neck to get ready, because if the words 'room' or 'decor' follow, those hairs will most certainly stand up.
No, themed decor is not at all for me. As a rule, I am not a fan of anything that masquerades as something it is not; faux finishing, ceramic 'stone' tile, floating floors, gaudy hollow columns, etc. By extension, I certainly don't subscribe to the idea of theme-ing rooms in the tradition of 'Island Retreat', 'Zen Den', 'Arabian Nights', and the like. Incorporating a certain feel that takes cue from these traditions is one thing, but there's nothing like the view of my mucky, post-February backyard through some indoor palms and silk sarong curtains to expose the fact that I am most definitely NOT in Thailand.
And don't even get me started on Buddah heads...
