I guess it’s cliché to say a show was highly anticipated, but I’ll say it just the same, because it was by me.
Four Houses Canada is the ultimate open house show. It takes exactly what we all do at open houses – snoop, judge, gloat, envy – pits homeowner against homeowner, and mic’s the whole thing.
And it’s pretty darn amusing. Because unlike in untelevised open houses, where you can say whatever you want in relative discretion, on Four Houses Canada you say it to the camera, which is pretty much to the homeowner’s face. Also, you might want to temper what you say because, guess what? They’re coming to your house next. Each episode sets four homeowners up to judge each other’s houses, the victor walking away with $1,000 and a photo spread in Style at Home magazine.
Lawyer Kalman’s Hungarian-themed family home won over figure skater Chantal’s French not-quite-chateau, florist Hilary’s almost antiseptic Victorian and office manager Gillian’s bizarre but definitely most memorable funhouse, which can only be described as Miss Havisham’s cottage.
I squirmed more than a few times last night as the side-eye and tight smiles came out in a battle for pride of ownership, and truly don’t know if Kalman, as nice as he was, should have won. Personally I vote for Gillian. Seriously.
