Like many apartment dwellers, my living room serves as my main living space, foyer, mudroom and closet - which is quite a feat considering my living room is comparable in size to that of a large walk-in closet. I long for the day when I'm able to have a space — that doesn't include my living room furniture — dedicated to storing coats, shoes and all my other miscellaneous items like umbrellas and shopping bags. So when I see pictures of mudrooms and front hall entrances furnished with attractive and functional storage solutions, I feel inspired and yet slightly envious.
Mudroom - Sarah's House Season 1
But even if your living room is spatially challenged and has to do the duty of three rooms, there are several storage options out there that can help keep the door clutter contained and fit in with your overall decor:
Lindi Trunk - Pier 1 ($179.95 US, check local store for Canadian pricing)
This trunk is perfect for storing hats, gloves and other accessories that aren't needed everyday and can also serve as a coffee table.

Storage Shelf - EQ3 ($329.99)
Pair this shelf with your favourite wicker or fabric baskets and you have a stylish way to hide stray pairs of shoes, dog leashes or mounds of mittens.
Cynthia Wardrobe - Pottery Barn ($999 US - check local store for Canadian pricing)
No closet, no problem! Both attractive and multi-purpose, this piece offers up adjustable shelving, fabric covered board to pin up your keys or reminder notes, and a mirrored front so you can give yourself a 'once over' before heading out the foor.

Other storage ideas for keeping the mess to a minimum at the front door in smaller spaces:
Umbrella holders. Keep wet-drippy messes contained with an umbrella holder and add a lovely decorative touch by the door.
Vintage coat racks. An old coat rack can help to give space by the door visual interest and give coats from living off the back of the nearest chair.
