DIY Valentine’s Day Bunting

Bunting is a go-to party decor item: its fun flags add instant pop to any party or special occasion. This Valentine’s Day, make bunting that is extra special by adding hearts! The following steps will show you how to make your own fabric heart bunting that is so cute you’ll want to keep it up all year round.

Materials:

The following materials will make bunting with 8 flags that spans 9’4”
Fabric for the flags (to make 8 flags you will need 1 yard of fabric)
Fabric for hearts (to make 8 hearts you will need a piece of fabric that is approx. 21”L x 14”H)
9’4” of cotton webbing (1.5” wide)
Hot glue gun
Scissors
Iron
Sewing pins
Sewing machine with white thread

STEP 1: Fun with flags

The first step is to prepare the flags. From your yard of fabric, cut eight rectangles that are 14”H x 7”W. Fold the rectangle in half and iron away any creases or wrinkles. To make the pointed tip of the flag, use your scissors to cut away a triangle from each side of the flag’s bottom edge.

STEP 2: Queen of hearts

Cut eight hearts out of your chosen fabric. I intentionally made each of my hearts a little bit different but if you’d like all of your hearts to be exactly the same, create a heart template on a piece of paper and use that as your guide when cutting the fabric.

STEP 3: Flag fixture

Fold the cotton webbing in half and iron. Measure 18.5” from one end of the webbing and place your first flag inside the fold of the webbing. Pin the flag and webbing in place. Place the next flag 3” away from the already pinned flag. Repeat these two steps for all of the flags. Starting at one of the edges where the webbing and flag is pinned, use your sewing machine to sew the perimetre of the flag. You do not need sew along the entire edge that is between the webbing, just make sure you you include the webbing when you sew the left and right sides of the flag. The purpose of this step is to attached the flags to the cotton webbing.

STEP 5: I heart you

The final step is to add the hearts to your bunting. Make an X on the flag with your hot glue gun and adhere the fabric heart to the glue. Repeat this step for all eight hearts.
