Creative Entertaining: Clam Bake in Style

Posted by Rana Florida, Associate Editor Thursday, June 20, 2013 1:11 PM EST

Summer is right around the corner, and we all know what that means: soon it will be time to fire up our backyard, deck, and poolside BBQs. There’s no better way to entertain friends and family on a warm summer night than with tasty food right off the grill.

Design and creativity are everywhere, so why not incorporate both into your entertaining? It doesn’t have to be complicated, hard or expensive. You don’t need a full catering team, professional party planners or florists. With a bit of imagination and attention to detail, anyone can pull it off.

You don’t need a beach or a fire pit to host a New England style clam bake, just a BBQ grill and a large pot. What easier way is there to entertain at home than to throw a big pile of lobsters, potatoes, chicken, Andouille sausage, little neck clams, cherry stone clams, shrimp, and corn on the cob on the grill.

Served up family styIe, guests can crack open a clam or dip a grilled lobster claw into some warm butter and wash it down with an old-fashioned gimlet that’s served with a distinctly modern twist. Using the traditional colors of the marina — blue and white with a splash of gold for the anchor — for decor and attire made this evening that much more special.

Creative Decor: Use simple decorative objects to enhance the mood. Take a look around your home; you’ll be surprised at what you can find. It’s all in the presentation. Dress up any appetizer by mixing and matching cocktail napkins, plates and glasses.

Fruit, floating flowers, and candles transform bowls, jars, and glasses into decorative vases. Ask your guests to dress in the theme to make the evening feel even more special.

Print up your own menu cards in the theme of the dinner to dress up any boring white plates. Marina blue and white with gold anchors served as the template.

Specialty Cocktails & Mocktails: Dress up any cocktail with exotic fruit and serve them in special glasses. As simple a touch as cocktail napkins on a tray add elegance and style. Freeze any fruit, edible flower, or herb into ice cubes, to add some extra sparkle to your drinks.

Mocktails for the children, served in jars with straws, are fun to drink and lovely to look at. The kids had fun sipping fresh lemonade out of old soup jars.

Flowers: Candles, flowers, beach balls and even lemons dressed up the table. No expensive floral arrangements are needed. Just buy a bunch of flowers in your color scheme and arrange casually.
