Top 5 Friday: Five Trends to Get Your Walls Noticed

By: Michelle Carangi of Montreal-based design office and blog, Holley&Gill

Whether in fashion or in your home, trends are not for the faint of heart.  What you do with them and how you interpret their message however, is where the magic begins. Your home is definitely the place to explore and try out new ideas. Forget about how far-fetched or outlandish these ideas might seem -- if the style genuinely speaks to you and represents who you are and how you feel, then any self doubt should be banished from the picture.

It's easy to forget how much of an impact can be made simply by using our walls. We might favor shopping for new furniture or accessories to create a new look, but often forget that our walls offer the perfect blank canvas!  Some may be put off by the daunting commitment, but in fact, being edgy and stylish with your walls is a lot easier than you might think...

Upholstered and Draped

BHG.com; Ashe+Leandro.com

If a certain colour or pattern of fabric is hitting the runway and has caught your eye, why not upholster or drape a feature wall?

Large Scale

KatieLydonInteriors.com

A favorite of mine, incorporating large scale art is bold and can turn your room into a private gallery.

Optical illusions

Betongvegg.no; LivingEtc.com

With wallpaper still trending, designs are leaning towards creating an illusion, like photorealism and simulated textures.

Glossy

HouseBeautiful.com

Although not for everyone, glossy walls are a confident choice especially in deep, saturated colours.

Modern Florals

ScandinavianChic.com; Skonahem.com

A damask is always classic and so are florals but when only one featured wall is papered it can take on a more modern and fresh look.

I have a question - would a glossy dark wall work in a kid's room?

I would say definitely, gloss finishes are for places which are high traffic and need to be washed easily. So perfect for a feature wall in a kid's room!

Nice post, Michelle. I have an hankering to try all of these things. Especially the optical illusion idea.

I really like the Upholstered idea!  I have a 3 year old who sleeps in a day bed placed against the wall and would be a nice padding and backdrop for her bed.  Very nice.

I love large scale art and want to do a grand piece for my loving room, but those glossy walls are making my heart go pitter patter.

I've been considering dark glossy walls for the bedroom, thanks for the reminder of how beautiful they are. So pleased you are blogging for hgtv canada now!

Am a big fan of wallpaper but not so much in the form of photorealism.   Love all the other ideas but beware of  the use of a high 'gloss dark colour'  on any wall.   Your walls must be in perfect condition and be without any inperfection plus proper application of the basecoat and  the paint is an absolute must and touchups can also be a challenge.

Super post  Michelle!   -Brenda-

I love the look of the wallpaper that creates an illusion! What an interesting idea! Where can you find wallpaper like this?

I LOVE the idea of a draped wall - done properly I imagine it could give the impression of wallpaper without the icky glue and future trouble of taking it off the wall when you tire of that decor (I am still bitter about all the layers I had to take off when I bought my home a couple of years ago...). I also love the idea of BIG art. It opens the room - makes it feel larger and creates perspective- especially if it is a scene or landscape. Thanks for the inspiration!

Wonderful ideas and gorgeous rooms. Love the large scale art, thinking about doing that in my living room.
