Bargain Saturday: Great Kitchen Reno Deals

A couple of Saturdays ago, we showed off Angie B.'s guest bedroom fabric bargain in response to our call for your bargain design finds. This week, David M. shares his kitchen reno deals: a granite countertop, cabinets, doors, knobs and more.

In David's words: Our dream kitchen included having a huge centre island, preferably topped in granite or stone. As we priced things out from the cabinets, cabinet doors, knobs, granite (and all other non-laminate surfaces!) we discovered that there was just no way we could afford to do it. But as luck would have it we were at Habitat for Humanity one day and this 8x4 piece of grey and white fleck granite was there. Again we were concerned about the price (these sizes range in price upwards of $1000); it was $250!! We also bought the four base cabinets, doors, knobs, etc. at Habitat. It took a couple of weeks to get everything because Habitat does not have "regular" stock items and so we had to wait and hunt around for everything we needed. So in the end, it did take a little bit of extra work and planning to do it ourselves and of course a bunch of people to help lift the granite into the kitchen. Ultimately though the whole project cost around $500. It is the centre piece of our kitchen and really the showpiece of the entire main floor.

Thanks, David!
