Who Won Canada's #HandymanChallenge? Drumroll Please...

On the season finale of Canada's Handyman Challenge last night, the final four contestants -- Greg, Brad, Maggie and Mark -- battled it out on a very hot day to impress judges Mike Holmes, Scott McGillivray and Bryan Baeumler with the final challenge: to design and build a deck over two days! Each finalist received help in the form of two members of one of the judges teams (who spotted Mike's kids Sherry and Mike Jr.?), so they weren't completely on their own.

So... who won the title of Canada's Best Handyman

Congratulations to Mark Falvai from Qualicum Beach, BC!

The father of four and graphic designer impressed the judges at his first audition in Vancouver where he brought in his amazing plywood chair and he kept the momentum going through the season with his creativity and skill.

We also held a fun Vote for the Fan Favourite contest on the Handyman show page. Who won the title?

Kyle Chura from Surrey, BC ran away with 53% of the votes. Congratulations Kyle!

What did you think of the finale?

Mark did not deserve the win.  Is this show for professional or amateur handyman?  I used to work construction and stucco with him in Nanaimo.  And saying he had never done a door or built a staircase is a lie.  He is a professional handyman and it kind of doesnt seem fair. Even though I'm an islander Brad was the best.

Based on who grew most on the show it should have gone to Maggie...Based on consistent performance ,Greg.Halifax should have gotten it either way. Mark should have failed the wallpaper challenge. He framed a piece of wallpaper?! And called it design? Who wants a piece of wallpaper in a frame in their house? Apparently there is a good designer that can make you one.

the best was Maggie

February 22, 2012 8:23 PM

They should have categories for winners... Most improved, best overall, best designer, etc... Glad Kyle got the fun vote.  I met him at auditions and he is genuine... Mark is snarly and anti-social but a creative guy.  Maggie with some experience and training would leave them all in the dust!  I wouldn't have wanted to be the judges shoes because they each had strengths and as they said... any one of them could have been the winner.  They could have broken the rules and crowned more than one though..

Question: How can I participate in the program "Canada's Handyman Challenge"?

I appreciate your consideration.

Thanks.

why was Bryan so cold when congratulating Mark ?didn't shake his hand, barely acknowledged him...hmmm....I really wanted Mark to win but if he truly is a professional handyman then yeah that's a little skewed.

February 22, 2012 10:07 PM

Mark is a handyman for a living.  He does the same kind of contracting as Bryan or Mike.  He is not a graphic designer and you can't be a self taught graphic designer!  He's not in our GDC association....I know because i am.  The show needs to research their contestants and have a stronger platform for judging.  He wasn't creative, just different and it swayed the judges votes because they didn't know what to make of him and that whiny voice.  So disappointed any of the other three would have been better.  This guy seems full of himself. How could a 19 year old have competed against a sly professional or against a 50 year old.

Kyle was the guy who made that show entertaining! Congratulations Kyle on winning the Fan Vote, you deserve it! It was entertaining and fun to watch your fun and sarcastic sense of humor, sparring with the judges. The Judges seemed to be slamming your 'out-of-the-box' thinking and figuring stuff out...but in my view, that's what a handyman is, one way or another, figuring something out for a desired end result! Kyle, you might be # 9 on HGTV, but as far as I saw, you are Canada's Best Handyman! Next time I need a Handyman...I'll look you up in Surrey!!

Hello

I wanted to comment about the show "Canadas Handyman"...I loved the show and watched every eposide BUT I was very disappointed at the end...out of 4 people they decided who would be the champ then the worst part was when Jillian (whom I wouldn't recommend to do the show again) annocned the winner "It's Mark"....and that's it. Commerical and finish...They should of should everything he did from the first to last challenge...and to top it off NO TROPHY or money at least a trophy first thing came to mind wow that's cheap..the trophy could of been a gold plated hammer...something at least.  I even looked at my boyfreind when Juliian said his name and the show ended I said "That's it?"...it was terrible ending.

Wow, I must have made it big! I have people making up stuff about me and hating on me.  Very cool.  I feel like a movie star. By the way my graphic and furniture designs have been in over 30 international magazines in the last 10 yrs. Thanks for all the fan support, especially to those who donated to my Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer.

Good for you Mark! Sorry about your father, i'm sure he's proud of you.

February 23, 2012 8:07 PM

Congratulations Mark!!!  You obviously impressed 3 judges who are experts in their field.  We didn't see everything that happened during the process but they did and what they saw (and, what was shown during the show) resulted in you being awarded the title.   You should be proud of yourself for what you've accomplished and ignore the haters.

February 23, 2012 9:21 PM

It's easy to join the haters when there's a guy who doesn't deserve to win. The chair for the audition Mark admitted was "some architects design, I saw in a magazine". Not his design. The other commenter was right, he didn't even do the wallpaper challenge. Mark made negative comments under his breath when he was paired with Maggie. You could see the displeasure as he began the task, sexist what? Both Brad and Greg were steady and consistent, their work was quality. Mike said several times that Mark's work wasn't quality. So how the heck did he win? With the sympathy card? The whole contest was a hoax. Talk about subjective. The only challenge that was fair was the one including the electrical work which was worth a certain amount of points. It should have been that way with each challenge, thereby eliminating the subjectivity. Harder to "baffle them with bullshit" and fake charm if you have to earn points for each aspect for a task. Maggie was the most improved but either Brad or Greg should have won, they were the best handymen. I just read Mark's comments, a little defensive? Making jokes about being a movie star. In his dreams. Congratulations Kyle, you were a fun guy, and looked real. A regular guy trying to be a handyman.

If Mark's graphic designs have been featured in over 30 international magazines, what would motivate him to be on a handyman show?

February 24, 2012 1:10 PM

Wow, what a bunch of nasty comments.  I thought this show was great!  The only thing I agree on was the anti-climactic ending.  There should have been a little more fan-fare.  But, we are Canadian, eh?  Gotta leave it to the Americans to do the real celebrating.  I guess this was the first handyman challenge, so hopefully if it is done again, these kinks will be worked out.  I liked it that we couldn't guess who the winner would be until it was announced.  Very exciting that they were all so close!  I did like the winner they chose, because even though others may have been more consistent, Mark was the most creative and still got the job done well.  Oh, and for you naysayers about the wallpaper job - I plan to have wallpaper inside paneling in the new house we are planning to buy this year.  I think it is stunning - if you disagree - look at several photos displayed on this website!  Congratulations Mark!!

February 24, 2012 1:35 PM

Mark brought in a chair design that wasn't his. He cheated on the wallpaper challenge. His light switch fell off.  His bunkbed wasn't finished and faulty.  He was sexist to Maggie in his challenge.  His stairs were done wrong. His deck didn't have any privacy and it was a dumb use of space to be round and to have a fire pit below in the middle.  Not to mention dangerous.  He wasn't the worst at each task and that is why he got to stay.  But in the end the other three were better.  Go Greg!!!! You are the one I want to hire for my projects.  Are you in Saskatchewan?

February 24, 2012 4:32 PM

I think Maggie deserves to be winner as well as Mark.

February 26, 2012 12:06 PM

I feel bad about Mark's dad...he must have really tried hard.

February 26, 2012 12:08 PM

If he isn't an amateur, then it really isn't fair a fair match. Shameful really.

February 26, 2012 12:59 PM

Who cares who won the show sucks anyway.

February 26, 2012 1:16 PM

Congratulations Marc you deserved it as  for Maggie she should have left a long time ago but i guess mike wanted to keep her.

February 26, 2012 9:43 PM

so happy for Marc why are there is so jealous of him i loved byran but since this cold shoulder he gave to marc i will never watch another show of him or holmes

February 26, 2012 9:50 PM

Enjoyed the series - very informative, but disliked Jillian Harris.  Totally unneeded.  You don't need someone to go around rubbing arms and backs and hugging the female competitor and whispering with the judges.  Just a waste.  All the top competitors were deserving to be there.  Good decision but bad ending.

February 26, 2012 10:40 PM

Seriously people? Gotta love the people hiding behind their keyboards. I thought they said in the first episode that you can't be a licensed contractor? They were all handymen, it was a "handyman challenge" not "future handyman challenge". Who cares if the design wasn't Mark's on the chair, the challenge was to build something out of a single sheet of plywood, and that chair looked pretty awesome! Why was a published graphic designer competing? Probably the same reason a firefighter and a cop was... Something they were interested in and were brave enough to try. You haters, what have you ever accomplished besides trolling on the web? Clown shoes.

February 27, 2012 2:46 AM

I agree with the ones above that stated that Mark cheated his way through the wallpaper challenge.  He should have been disqualified at that point for his challenge being incomplete!  Framing a square of wallpaper was not the task at hand.  Then he had plenty of time to perfect his drywall and trim which still was not perfect.  At least 19 year old contestant Andrew admitted that he had never done wallpapering before but still  finished the challenge to the best of his ability and hung all his wallpaper.....but yet the judges still sent Andrew packing.  I do agree with you guys that Mark was getting the sympathy vote and favouritsm for being "artsy"
