Would You Buy a Designer Toilet Paper Roll Cover?

Colour-loving designer, Jonathan Adler, recently teamed up with toilet paper brand Cottonelle to launch a new line of limited-edition roll covers. The containers feature bold and funky geometric prints on plastic canisters just large enough to house your standard double-plyer.

At the media event, Adler was beamed in via Skype to field questions from the press, and explained that the prints were actually inspired by his Bargellow Pillows.

"Why not make your toilet paper as adorable as anything else in your house," he said. "Every object in your home should be nifty."

I'm going out on a limb here and guessing what you, dear reader, might be thinking at this exact momento: do we really need to buy designer accessories for our rolls?

Well, no, we don't. However, it's not like some of us haven't wandered down the road of TP chic before. Remember back in the 80s when coloured toilet paper was all the rage (WHAT were we thinking?). And, have you ever walked through a bathroom accessories section without seeing some sort of contraption designed to house rolls (unassuming wicker baskets; free-standing wire do-hickies).

At least these poppy numbers are a funky alternative to their more humdrum cousins on the market (I'm looking squarely at you crocheted TP covers of the world).

However, this also raises another line of questioning; one of a more psychological bent: why are we so ashamed of seeing toilet paper rolls in the first place? They're in the bathroom—that is their natural habitat.

The bathroom is a designated zone for utilitarian functions. You're there to "do your business" so to speak (bathe, brush your teeth, etc., etc—you know what that means, I do not need to spell out etcetera, etcetera!). So, why aren't we ashamed to see toothbrushes in plain sight? Why isn't anyone trying to cover up their naked body wash bottles? Can't we just let the roll play it's role without shame?

If you answered no, then I should tell you that the Jonathan Adler covers are free with an offer code found in specially marked packs of Cottonelle toilet paper. Visit respecttheroll.com for more details.

Remember back in the 80's lots of people had tissue box covers? But they went out, probably because people were tired of putting the cover on. Then companies started decorating the boxes themselves, negating the need for a cover. It's the same with toilet paper roll covers. They look nice, but they won't last too long because people will get sick of putting the toilet paper in them. It's an extra time-consuming step that people just won't do in the long run. It'll sit there with toilet paper in it and never get used and then it'll become a decoration and decorations in bathrooms that take up real estate don't last long. I have 4 little kids and can't imagine taking the time to put a spare roll in the little holder every other day. I get double rolls and stack them up on a shelf ready to go so I don't have to bother with it too often. This idea struck me as a fad as soon as I saw it. It's nice, and looks pretty, but in the long run people just won't use it and they'll get chucked out.

No I won't buy one. It will just become clutter, which I'm trying to reduce in my house!!

What are these made out of? I'm curious. Cardboard? Metal? Plastic? I'd never use this for what it's intended but I do think they are cute. I could see them making great containers for my daughters crayons, markers and other small bits and pieces.

I'd happily buy it.  I hope he comes out with a kleenex one as well!  Great fun.
