Discuss: Sarah's House 4, Family & Dining Room

Ooooo! Neutrals meet peacock blues! When I visited the set of Sarah's House 4, I sat in this family room to interview Tommy and Sarah, and it felt quite regal, as well as being family-friendly and inviting.

That coffee table, Sarah confessed, was not as smooth of a project as it may appear on the show, but it looked great up close!

What do you guys think of the family and dining room? Sarah went for Drama with a capital 'D' in the dining room, using one of my favourite colour combos: peacock blue and gold. Though it may not be to everyone's taste, you can take some cues from the palette for Entertaining Season coming up. I have to also say, being in the room felt like I was in a lush Art Nouveau-inspired salon, and that says holidays to me...

Loved loved loved the living room.  So elegant and beautiful.  It was inspiring to see it come together.  However, I hated the dining room!  Did not like the color palette.  It seemed too jarring, and did not match the elegance and timelessness of the living room.

I love the family room very much. the colour palette is fantastic

But de dining room .... I found these different shade of blue being too much . Normally  I like the colour blue but this time for this dining room  it makes the room too cold and not inviting. Sorry Sarah!   Frederique James..

I agree, I loved the family room (classic Sarah) the storage walls using kitchen cabinets- Genius!!!! but the dining room UGH!!!! so far from what she normally does. This one was a swing and a miss. too many different blues ( None of them went together) I think the walls should have been a neutral in order to tame the blue. to me this room did not read classic timeless dining room.

I liked the family room but didnt love it.  I thought the coffee table was very ugly.  The dining room was shockingly bad. I preferred the chairs before they were recovered.  There is no flow to the house- one room after the other if a different colour with different design era and ideas.

I liked the family room except for the table, really sort of ugly and I did  not like the dining room...too much blue and a horse? really?

November 2, 2011 11:55 PM

I don't care what you guys say!  That dining room was great.  The horse painting made the room work.

I should have included the denim wallpaper didn't work, as I'm sure you agree in retrospect and the dining room didn't have the calm, serene atmosphere we have come to expect....it just jarred.....can you re-do???

Dale, the horse painting would have worked in a country/barn type house

I suppose you would prefer a painting of flowers!!!!!!

November 3, 2011 12:17 AM

Dale, to each our own... but thank goodness I didn't pay for that room.....

November 3, 2011 12:17 AM

dale, horses or flowers?  is that it?  They didn't show the search for art so who knows what options they had.

Why are there unrelated posted in the comments section?

I would love for someone to explain to me why Sarah and Tommy always round their costs DOWN. The table was $1985 - Tommy said it was "only $1900". And the fabric that was clearly marked as $9.99 (which is $10) Sarah said was "nine dollars a yard". Are there designer discounts we're not told about?

And I love Sarah and Tommy, I really do, and I love their style choices most of the time, but can they address that spending $20,000 on EACH ROOM is just not possible for most people?

Loved the living room

But the Dinning everything is lovely but the wall so juvenile

November 3, 2011 2:17 PM

Loved the family room but did not like the dining room. I am sick and tired of the $20,000+ for each room! Does Sarah look at these comments at all? Please please do a room that most of us poor slobs could afford!

Loved the serene quality of the family room.  The chandelier, chaise and coffee table were my favourites along with the pillows and depth of the couch.  The dining room...the less said the better.  Looking forward to the next two episodes, just wish each episode was an hour long.

The dining room was terrible. Sorry guys I think she's gone off the colour deep end! I think this house would give me a migraine.

November 3, 2011 4:22 PM

I loved the kitchen & family room (like someone said classic Sarah) but the dining room sorry was not good. The blue just didn't do it for me.  Most of the colors so far are too strong/bright  for me. I prefer the calm relaxing muted tones.

I liked the family room, felt there were a few to many legs on the coffee table. Really did not like the dining room. I did not like how the wall paper showed as individual pieces, there seemed to be a glow of some sort on each matched edge, that would drive me crazy, looks defective. I normally love everything Sarah does, but this house just seems to be different in every direction, no continuity between visible rooms. My favorite room so far is the kitchen.

Very nice family room I Love it! HATE hate hate the bottom blue of the dining room, so ugly...

I love you Sarah and Tommy none the less.

I would like to see more of the show room look Sarah did with her brother, with red dining, blue living room and yellow bedroom, those were perfectly young and cute.

i agree with most of the comments here ... i really liked the china pattern for the dining room, and i loved the rug and chandelier ... i also thought the painting was quite a brilliant choice, and for one reason or another it makes me think of ancient greek symposiums (drinking, and eating, together parties).  i personally would have chosen the lightest blue option shown for the seagrass wall-covering (though i also noticed the seamlines) and probably a creamy/bone colour for the wall below the chair rail.

the family room, while very pretty, had a bit too formal an edge for my thinking ... perhaps it was the lovely white chairs?!  despite sarah's words that there was nothing precious in the room, i would disagree.  how do you clean white chairs when they are *not* slipcovered?

November 4, 2011 3:09 PM

I feel the dining room is a bit far from the kitchen - too many steps between both rooms.

I do like what Sarah and Tommy were going for with different shades of blue.  Unfortunately, these blues do not agree with one another.  As for the seagrass, the seams will appear as it is a natural product and each piece as its own pattern.

Some of you are saying that a 20k budget per room is too high.  I have to disagree.  I believe a 15-20k budget is a reasonable amount.  You have to buy furniture, drapes, rugs, cushions, artwork, ...  You must not forget the house the decor is meant for.  It has to agree with its grandeur and style.

Your colors...  a split complementary?  I see where you are going and love that you are putting colors up front even if the blues of the dining room don't match one another.

November 4, 2011 5:03 PM

I actually like the dining room, love the horse picture - quite unexpected.  However, the striped trim on the chairs adds another sight line breakage, almost too harsh.  The wall paper strips - showing each strip - also will not work in a year.  Did you paint that part of the wall the same colour as the paper so the seams are less visible when the do part?

what is all the spam?

November 4, 2011 8:25 PM

The living room is too feminine. The dining room seems like it's trying to hard. The kitchen is the best - icomfortable in its own space. Would like to see an episode where a piece of fabric is not the "jumping off point". Is Sarah not inspired by anything else?

November 4, 2011 10:16 PM

You are not going to find a bigger fan of blue than myself BUT the Dining Room to me was boderline line, ummmmm ...... abusive though I did love the choice of  paisley fabric for the window coverings.   Also I am totally a fan of horses as well (really and sincerely I am)  BUT feel  the canvas equestrian artwork chosen was somewhat  of a disappointment.  (There are some fabulous pieces out there.)

In summary, too many blues clashing and a  photograph of a horse would have served the same purpose.     Sorry guys, but I'm not terribly impressed with 'this' room but still love ya!  :)

I usually love Sarah's work and Tommy is fun but this season of Sarah's House is a very iced bag. Ilike the kitchen and family room -- the colours work alone and together but that dining room is just ugly. I can't imagine eating in that room with that horse staring at me either. Love horses but the painting against those bright blue walls is just too much. I'm looking forward to the final walk through because at this point i can't see how all of the colour schemes are going to hang together. There's too little visual breathing space in this house.

I just purchased a 'cookie cutter' new build and we haven't yet started to pick our upgrades.  This is perfect timing.  I'm getting some great overall tips from the show. Not into or watching for the design this time but am finding it invaluable for someone who is building from scratch.  So if that was the main aim of the show kudos!  We need a nice little list of tips and tricks too please :) for easy reference.

I have watched the Dining Room episode a few times and see that Sarah and Tommy followed their usual process.  If the blue was beige, everyone would be thrilled. It is the blue that is throwing everyone.  (Maybe it doesn't come through on TV as it does in reality.)  I think she said it was going to be a colourful house.   So be it.

November 7, 2011 5:13 PM

I absolutely love this show and it is my "happy night" when it is on but I have to say, she lost me on the dining room.  I think it was all just too too much.  The horse print - omg.  It just didn't make sense to me in such a formal space?  And all that blue - wowza.  I agree with the rounding down comment - too funny!!  The show is great but I find it isn't as much about taking a cookie cutter house and working with the contractor as it is just about decorating another house.?   Regardless, love Sarah and would have her decorate for me ANY day of the week!

November 9, 2011 11:51 AM

I agree with most of the comments here. The family room was nice, the highlight of which was the storage unit, the lowlight of which was the coffee table, but it can be forgiven. The dining room on the other hand was a mess. The wallpaper seams showed and I am never really a fan of grass cloth but if you are going to do it, it should be natural, not vivid blue. I like colour but this blue on blue on blue with the deco buffet did not work for me. And what about flow from one room to the next? Yikes. That dining room is a disaster, and at a price tag of $20K, it should be better. When is Tommy getting his own show?

November 9, 2011 3:17 PM

I would love to know how/where the electrical cords went for the tv etc in the family room. I looked and looked at the video and photo gallery but I cannot see the power cords!

I need to know her secret for hiding them...especially since the tv was on a STONE countertop and the unit was flush up against the wall.

Please please someone show me/tell me how she does this!

The  Sarah's  House 4 has been  disappointed , to much pattern , to much color , to much vintage !
