Designer Sarah Richardson is known for her love of pale blues and greens, and while this dining room from Sarah 101 includes a soothing blue, the smattering of bold accent colours in this room add an unexpected twist.
When studying the space you realize that the patterned fabrics -- the scrolling curlicue of the wallpaper, the geometric seat cushions and the floral of the seat backs -- are what bring excitement to the eye and contrast to the space. The room is anchored by the dark hardwood floors and furniture, as well as by the lightness of the chair-rail-height paneling, but then you get those pops of pink and chartreuse, as well as the cooling blue of the wallpaper.
Deep, rich pink, yellowy and mod chartreuse don't seem like a fit, but when you see where Sarah got the palette from, it all starts to make sense.
The pink and silvery blue in the floral fabric are echoed in the wallpaper and the velvet-covered stool. The wallpaper's golden pattern compliments the side chairs, which hit on the silvery blue again with the striped seat. See how it all comes together?
The tableware also includes pieces that adhere to the blue, pink, silver, gold and chartreuse palette. Paying attention to the little details is what elevates a room from pretty to interesting.
This palette would work equally well in a girl's room or a feminine home office; you can incorporate the colours any way you like, as long as you have a neutral base in the wall colour (think light gray-blue or a soft warm beige).
For a girl's room: A Tonic Living throw pillow in our yellowy tone; a deep rose kilim rug (and is that a hit of chartreuse?) by Pottery Barn Teen
For a home office: A chartreuse desk chair by Ikea; this GORGEOUS storage cabinet by Swedish designer A2
What do you think of this unexpected, but completely usable palette?
