Question of the Week: How Much Would You Spend on a Crib?

Following my Splurge vs Steal post last week, I realized we need to face a certain fact: we are WAY overspending on baby and kids rooms. Myself included.

As mentioned, I spent in upwards of $1600 on my little girl's convertible crib and change pad attachment. Did I love it? It made me happy. Did it make for a happier baby? I doubt it. But I was powerless against 'first child' syndrome -- you know how some (most) parents go crazy and fuss and frill out their first child's room and then the second child is basically left to languish in a broom closet? (Not literally, but you know what I mean.)

Well, usually this is because the second time around parents are over the sacred, fantastical sanctuary known as the nursery. Though decorating is an enjoyable and some might argue integral part of immersing one's self into the role of parent, by the second child, parents know that in the end, it's all just stuff.

And yet, a crib is the sofa of your child's room. It's the style-setter, the investment piece, the repository of the most precious part of your existence. Maybe you can't put a price on that?

What do you think is reasonable? What did you spend, and do you judge people like me who spent $1600 when they could have spend $300?

I would spend as little as posible, proably Ikea (which is what I did) the kid is in it for 3 year tops and then to top it all off they sould change the regulations and your crib becomes obsolete and you can't even sell it. after 3 years of age I would but a single with a trundle, or inexpensive youth bed then bunkbeds by the age of 7-8 (for sleepovers). Take it from one that knows.

We spent very little outfitting our first Son's nursery. With all the items that we got through Baby showers, and items that were passed down from our generous friends, we have probably only spent a few hundred dollars on a few items at most to paint the room and convert it. Maybe not everyone is fortunat enough to get hand me downs, but our rooms looks as good as any $1600 nursery.

I could see spending a few hundred dollars on a crib if it was a convertible one that would grow with the child.  What I don't understand are the convertible cribs that go from crib to toddler bed to double bed.  We spent $25 on a used, pre-regulation change crib and did the necessary modifications to make it safe. Now I have a beautiful solid wood, all metal hardware crib from under $50.  If I were to do it all over, I'd buy a portable crib (ie. playpen) because my son was in single bed by 18 mos.

Hmmm so are youngsters moving out of their convertible toddler beds faster than the convertible crib industry purports?

I think it is insane that you would spend 1600 dollars on a crib whether or not you could afford it.

That being said....I love when people like you buy cribs like that and sell them at a garage sale for people like me to buy it for 50 dollars after your first little one used it.

So, I suppose yes I judge "people like you" who do that. But I can't judge you without judging myself as well.

So you splurged on a crib, maybe that was your big purchase. Your "I"m-going-to-be-the-best-mom-ever-I'm-so-excited" purchase.

Judgmental Mom's such as myself, all have our "1600 dollar crib". Whether its a purse, diaper bag, clothing, house, vehicle, crib, outfit, change table, swing, you name it.

Mine would be a stroller. I want a super duper uber expensive jogging stroller. New. Never been used. All mine.

Insane. Who would spend that on a jogging stroller?

Apparently me.

Isn't a happy mom a happy baby? A happy wife a happy wife?

Maybe you can't put a price on that. (As long as it isn't really breaking any bank or unnecessary debt.)

My theory.
