We've teamed up with Foodnetwork.ca and Slice.ca to bring you the best home, food and fashion trends each month within a certain theme. For July, we're seeing bright, bold colours in decor, accents and accessories for the home, but more specifically, we're seeing bold colours paired with other bold colours in a style that's known as colour blocking. Colour blocking is often geometric and linear in pattern -- think literal blocks of colour butting up against one another. No freewheeling patterns or eclectic paisleys here.
TWIST bench by Domison
Take the TWIST bench, above, by Domison, the label of Canadian brother-sister design team Thien and My Ta Trung (we interviewed the Trungs during the Interior Design Show's Sibling Revelry exhibit this year). The pairing of red and orange is a tried-and-true bold combination, much like pink and orange, red and purple or blue and green. With its linear lines and modern design, the TWIST bench is a great example of this trend and can be made in any colour combination.
For something more accessible, try changing items around your house, like your sheets, towels, dishware or a piece of artwork. Since colour blocking has a linear form, you can even paint your own canvas. All you need is painter's tape, a ruler and a selection of bold colours.

Or, you can pick up a boldly coloured piece of art, like this print by J. Otto Seibold. While it's not abstract, the strong colour combinations and lines make this print a simple way to bring this bold trend to your home.
