Question of the Week: Exposed Bathtubs in the Master Bedroom, Yay or Nay?

Bathrooms month continues on HGTV.ca, so it's with "theme spirit" that I pose the following Question of the Week:

How do you feel about exposed bathtubs, like the stunning soaker pictured above, from Marriage Under Construction season 3? The master bedroom is the entire third floor and homeowners Rod (of upcoming Food Network Canada show, The Delinquent Gourmet -- small world!) and his wife Nat made it a spa-like retreat by having an open concept bathroom.

The tub in all its glory...can you tell I'm slightly jealous? Sigh. Toronto rental apartments do not have tubs like this, just saying.

I sure would!  As long as its owner keeps it clean, I like it!

And when you want privacy, you can go in the family bath or in the shower (if it doesn't have glass doors or walls)

I soooo hate this trend.

Keep it clean and semi hidden and use good materials.....  with living spaces getting smaller, its not a bad thing.  I'd rather have this then no bathtub.

its not for me. I think that in a modern home it would work, but by the slopped cellings, this is an older home, therefore, not appropriate for the style of the home

I don't like it at all.  If your spouse gets up before you and runs the water, really are you going to be able to sleep through that.  Sometimes these architects/home designers just don't think things through.

I love it! But I also designed it :)  This was Rod and Nat's dream master suite.  They wanted it to feel like a hotel where one can have a bath while the other hangs out and chats. This for sure is not for everyone, but that's the beauty in a custom home design, this design was perfect for them!  They also are lucky to have a 3 piece bathroom on  the floor below for those mornings where one person wants to sleep in - great point Cleo.

My vote: trends are out, designing for your lifestyle is in!

ps.  Alicia, I'll try to sneak an exposed tub design in on an episode of Income Property.  You can rent it when we're done!

I like a long soak and when the tub is exposed all the heat is going to leave it quickly. It looks nice but I am a more practical person.

Ha, thanks Melissa! I'll keep my eye out on Income Property :)

I say yay, if you're a couple or single (or have a good lock). Probably nay if you have kids. However, this yay is conditional: I must also have another bathroom somewhere else in the house as well... in case I do want some privacy at some point OR I don't want to see some big hairy dude scrubbing down while I try to read a book from the bedroom. #TMI

We recently renovated a home and built a new one.  Obviously, consideration of our lifestyle was very important when making decisions, but we also had to consider re-sale.  While we have no plan at the moment to sell either property, life can change on a dime so we made certain choices that would appeal to a wide variety of potential purchasers.  I think a tub in a bedroom could put off more buyers than it would attract.  A beautiful, luxurious, "stand-alone" bathroom is always a big selling point, so I would go that way instead of installing a bathroom fixture in a bedroom.

Not for everyone

Nay, until someone convinces me there is sensability to it. :)  -Brenda-
