Question of the Week: Would You Paint a Room Black? Do You Have One Already?

Last week we published a new Original Home Tour, the Toronto home of designer Jane Hall, known for her bold colour choices and eclectic custom pieces. What really caught my eye was how she used black paint in her living room (a Sherwin Williams warm matte black called Black Magic).

Jane's style is feminine and bright, and the black room didn't overshadow that. In fact, with the adjoining dining area popping in hot pink, the black didn't seem dark or gloomy at all. Then, I remembered another black room I really enjoyed: the bathroom at Emma and Myles' home, from their Toronto home tour.

It's clean and classy, you can't go wrong with a black and white palette. And homeowner Emma says that though the walls can get streaky, they just wipe them down to get rid of any soap residue.

So what do you think? Would you paint a room black, or do you have a black room in your house? Take a poll!

Comments:

I like matte black. I don't have any the architectural features or art collection to justify a black room but I don't mind it. We did look at an older house in Halifax with a long upstairs hallway with black trim and black doors. They were in a gloss finish and it looked like a haunted house.

I would definitely do it in the right space. I think maybe the smaller the space the better, no?

Not a room, but a fireplace - yes!

Absolutely! I'm a shift worker and I painted a downstairs room black with heavy curtains to trick my mind when it is the middle of the day. Works beautifully.

I never thought I would...but I did and I love it! I painted my home office/creative think-tank room black.  It's a good sized room with two very bright windows on one wall and white closets on the opposite wall which allows for loads of bright light to make the room fell less 'dungeon like'.  Paint colour is Black Beauty by Benjamin Moore (incidentally now what I nickname this room). It's a matte finish and looks terrific!

I've had both a black bathroom and a black kitchen. In both spaces everything was black except the ceilings. Everything was shiny too. The bathroom was all shiny black tiles: floor, walls. The tub was coated with shiny black epoxy. There was a black vanity and black sink. The kitchen walls were painted with a tough, shiny black paint used for painting machinery. The cabinets were shiny black laminate. The floors were black industrial rubber tiles that I kept a glossy polish on. The counters echoed the floor with the same round disk pattern and were kept shiny clean. I loved them both because anything not black just shone like the sun inside those spaces: towels, lemons. They were spectacular!

I would, dramatic!

Where's the choice for "I would try it!"

I haven't done so but love the look and think Black is under utilized as any but an accent colour in decorating.

I painted my kitchen black a few years back and it was beatiful.

@Michelle, good point! I did forget the "I would try it" part of the poll. Sorry about that!

Black can be great given the right situation. Your poll question does not take into consideration everyone. There is no option for people that do not have a black room but would definitely create one if the opportunity arose.

Would have 'black' over 'red' any day.  (No offense to Ms. Hall and her impeccable taste.)
