Question of the Week: Craft Room or Home Office? Is One Replacing the Other?

Are craft rooms fast becoming a necessity? I knew this trend had passed into integral living component when model homes in suburban developments began staging craft rooms in addition to, and sometimes even in lieu of, the home office. Of course organizing your scraps of wrapping paper and recycled ribbon into a functional nook is way better than keeping a cluttered bunch of bags in the guest room (me), but the whole idea of dedicating an entire room to craft supplies may be taking things to the extreme.

Normally here is where I would say, I don't know anyone with a craft room. But I do. More than those with a home office. With perpetual refinement of the laptop and other computer gadgets, home offices have become your sofa, the kitchen table or the local coffee shop; that is to say, obsolete.

People with craft rooms range from childless professionals to stay-at-home-parents of multiple children; their homes range from tiny downtown condos to sprawling suburban McMansions. Dowels threaded with spools of ribbon, magnetic containers with clear screw tops showing off colourful whats'its, piles of fabric swatches and scraps of wallpaper are indeed replacing utilitarian shelves of files, old school books and household paper work.

Still, I don't know how on board I am with the craft room. Are craft rooms the invention of the lifestyle industry and residential developers to purge the 'boring' stuff of everyday life from our idea of 'home', or are they indeed the new home office and an integral part of contemporary living?

Take a Poll!

Home office, hands down. But I'm not all that crafty.

If you have the space, IMO definitely both.  In my experience, I have found a well-organized office space doesn't really take up all that much space, whereas my Craft space is at least six times as large with designated areas for mutiple tasks and supplies.   -Brenda-

I don't know that the craft room is all such a new idea. My mother and my grandmother both, and my husband's mother - all had/have sewing rooms. Same thing (I think), I sew and quilt, and knit and... it's easier to keep it all in one place rather than having to find a spot to dig out all the equipment whenever I have any mending to do. Hubby has the garage for his hobbies, (of course I play out there too), and I have my sewing room for most of mine (he plays in there too sometimes)

We also have a home office, for the computers and bills and we have a part time small business we run from home - so absolutely necessary.

I see our den as a combination of home office and craft room - it never occurred to me that it couldn't be both. We have an enormous antique desk, which is filled with office and craft supplies, a filing cabinet, and book shelves filled with a combination of books, photo albums, and crafting items. Why distinguish between a home office and a craft room? Aren't craft rooms and home offices really just the same thing - a place for people to work on projects?

A home office is a definite must.  It would be nice if a craft area could fit in the same room, but it doesn't.  My craft area is not quite an entire room.  More of a very wide hallway, with an armoire and small desk.  If we didn't own our own business, then both could probably fit into one room.
