New & Now, Splurge Vs. Steal: Reclaimed Harvest Tables

Having just bought a house that's considerably larger than the shoebox condo I currently reside in, I'm now hunting for new furniture, specifically a dining table. And I must say, it's exciting not to be looking for condo-sized or space-saving pieces. My boyfriend and I both love the look of a rustic harvest table and have been shopping everywhere from malls to online classified ads on Craigslist and Kijiji. Since online furniture ads change quickly, I've focused this post on major retailers and local crafts people.

I've also included only recycled or reclaimed wood tables because not only are they much more interesting looking, they're trendy AND friendly to the environment, which really, should always be in fashion.

Major Retailers: Pottery Barn Vs. Urban Barn

From Left: Pottery Barn Rainier Recycled Wood Dining Table, $1,299; Urban Barn Irish Coast Rectangular Dining Table, $749

Pottery Barn's Rainier table is 72 inches long and extends to 96 inches with leaves. It's made of reclaimed FSC-certified (forest stewardship council) pine. Urban Barn's Irish Coast table doesn't come with leaves but at 71 inches long, it should easily fit your family for dinner. It is also made with reclaimed pine and all the hardware is also recycled.

Local Crafts People: HD Threshing Floor Furniture Vs. The Pine Store

From left: HD Threshing Floor Furniture St. Clements table, $2,400; The Pine Store barn board table, $650 - $1050

HD Threshing Floor Furniture in Cambridge, Ontario sells their six foot harvest tables for $2,400 finished or $1,600 unfinished. This includes one drawer plus your option of custom or pre-selected legs. The Pine Store in Toronto sells reclaimed barn board tables, handcrafted by local Mennonite families in one, two or three-inch thicknesses and six foot tables range in price from $650 to $1050.

Comments:

I was recently in the shopping market for a rustic table, I ended up buying this one (fourgreensteps.com/marketplace/Vermont-Woods-Studio-Rustic-Mission-Table.html) because it is handmade so it is good for the environment, and is low in voc (volatile organic compounds), which makes me feel safer especially with two young children.

In North Vancouver visit Consignment Canada and there is a lovely rustic farm house table and chairs and several hutch and storage cupboards.  Am I safe in assuming you are writing about items in the Toronto area?  There may be a Consignment Canada in that area but the franchise in N. Vancouver is evidently the best across Canada.  I have purchased numerous items there, off of Craig's list under antique's and other consignment stores.

I feel in love with Urban Barn's Irish Coast  dining table , bought in square. Everyone who comes over fall in love with it. It is so big we can seat 8 with lots of room and the table is so big you have to stand to reach your food. Love it for parties and buffets. It was purchased in North Edmonton.

If you live in Duncan, Kelowna, Calgary or Saskatoon you can get a great Canadian made (made on Vancouver Island) harvest table.  They have standard sizes (42"w x 72"l or 84"l) in your choice of finish at Modern Country Interiors. I love that store!! The staff is so helpful and nice too! You can get it distressed so it looks like an antique.  It is not reclaimed but it doesn't come from overseas.  They get their wood from within 100 miles of their factory.

Check out Rustic Benches dot 'ca', which is a small home-based business with fabulous custom made tables, benches, etc. Located right outside Perth, ON, the prices are very reasonable and it fits in to your search for supporting local artisans!
