Question of the Week: Are Above-Counter Sinks Over?

My parents are in the process of renovating their bathroom and so I have been privy to many discussions on counter tops, faucets and sinks. Ultimately they chose to go with a built-in, recessed sink. I think they made the right decision. Plumbing-wise, it's a lot more reliable and less likely to leak. Style-wise, I think it's the more sophisticated way to go and of course, it's pretty much impossible for it to fall out of fashion.

What do you think? Do you have above-counter sinks? What are their downfalls or why are the better?

Comments:

In the right house, with the right sink and the right decor, they are still great. But putting them in for the sake of them being "different" in a house or a room that doesn't suit it is pointless.

I have one. Our place is new, so I hope not, but I am kind of ambivalent anyways... the washroom is not what I would have chosen if I got to design it from scratch, but i don't completely hate it either.

I feel many are quite sytlish however I do feel they may have seen their day namely for the reasons you given plus I question their practicality in a household that has children.  If anything, I think the new trend in the future will be sinks with shallower basins.
