Question of the Week: Which Chair is More Versatile?

Clockwise from the top: Wishbone chairs in dining room setting; Tobias chair from IKEA; Elana's mother's kitchen; Wishbone or Y chair by Hans J. Wegner, available through GabrielRoss.com.

Is it time to look elsewhere for dining room style? Or do we love these chairs so because of their boundless versatility?  Certainly not a new trend, but a prevailing one for sure!  I would LOVE to know which chair statistically appears more often on the pages of popular decor mags...  Though the Wishbone chair by Danish designer Hans J. Wegner (originally designed in 1950) is about six times the price -- in upwards of $600 a chair -- of IKEA's retro-looking Tobias chair ($129), I'd wager the count would be pretty close...

I will also add that I only know one person who actually owns the Wishbone chairs as dining room chairs (meaning, they bought six!), but that Sarah Richardson, Bryan Baeumler (watch my tour of B Baeum's basement to catch a peek of the chairs), my colleague Christine (of Balcony Makeover fame) and my mother (as per the photo above), have all made use of the Tobias chair.

Which do you prefer?  (Now, don't be rash and judge simply by the price tag...Think aesthetics and investment value!)

Take a Poll!

I just purchased the Tobias chair for my vanity and I am loving it!!  (justbellablog.com/2010/09/my-house-all-dressed-up.html)

I love that if feels so weightless in a room and gives it a modern edge, definitely versatile!

I do like that IKEA chair, in fact gave it a test run at IKEA just this weekend, but the Wishbone? Sigh. Too dreamy not to vote for the Wishbone.

Like 'Bev' and because comfort plus mobility is something I'd consider first,  perhaps #3 if there was one.  With that said, I am not necessarily saying I dislike the style of either one featured as they do look good.   -Brenda-

ikea is almost never worth the investment for big ticket items that you use A LOT... you pay for what you'll get in this case... and with ikea it will be a chair that isn't as quality as the wb chair... you  may end up buying a set of new chairs from ikea in few yrs and couldve put that towards the real thing... plus its art and with real art, you'll always get ur moneys worth when its time to sell.
