Real People Reno: Fancy Fancy En Suite

It's funny, most of the Real People Renos my net pulls in happen to be bathrooms...  I canvas everyone I know for reno photos and I try to present a variety of projects, but people just LOVE to renovate bathrooms!

So ok -- I'm giving in.  If it's bathrooms I get, it's bathrooms I'm going to post.  And I have to admit: I love a bathroom reno myself.  This bathroom stuck out for me because of the attention to detail.  Obviously someone took pleasure in this reno -- why else would you choose that splendidly decorative painting in a  water closet of an en suite, that no one is really going to see except for you? (See gallery below.)  Incidentally, I was onto something -- Kim describes herself as having a passion for decorating (she's a former music industry marketing executive.)

"Before"/ In Progress

Most rooms in the house have had a recent face lift except for the en suite. It was time.

The aim: clean, simple, contemporary, modern.

Inspiration: owner travels for work and loves the look of boutique hotels (has always wanted a rain shower head).

Stylistic elements: tried to stick to a 'square' theme, but loved the painting hung in the water closet (see gallery), and used that as a jumping off point for some of the circular features in the space: globe ceiling light fixture, clock.  The painting also served as the inspiration for the neutral colour palette.

DIYs: the owner's father did all the plumbing and light fixture installation.

"After"

Tiles: owner chose brown/grey slate for the floor to hide dirt and hair but kept all wall tiles white, in a subway pattern, to give a clean, bright feel.

Resources: All finishes, Home Depot.  Window treatment and accordion blinds, Canadian Tire.

Accessories (clock, bath sign, tumbler and soap dispenser, towel, square mirror): Home Sense.

Minor issue: granite countertop came with built-in sinks which didn't line up with existing plumbing. The sinks were removed to add over-counter sinks which allowed for the plumbing to be left undisturbed.
