Modern Country: Unexpected Arrangements

We're big on flowers here at the farm. But one thing I like to do is use unexpected things from the garden that wouldn't be considered for an arrangement; also things that wouldn't be used for a vase.

One of my favourite things to pick and use is dill. It's so graphic, airy and simple that all it needs is a tall drinking glass from the kitchen.

When the door to my greenhouse broke my husband was going to throw out the door handle panel. I saved it just in time and It now leans against the wall and I've hung a vase with a wire hook on the door knob.

This is my garlic scale in the Shabby Shack (left.) So, I'm trying to mask the garlicky smell with sweet peas in this antique wool spindle. I don't think it's working but it looks really cute.

I took some empty tin cans from supper last night and wrapped them in some pretty paper. I filled the cans with sugar peas from the vegetable garden.

My daughter snapped off a bunch of flowers from the fuchsia plant so I grabbed a glass bowl and set them afloat.

I like to take canning jars and hang them by fishing line over the table. Begonia leaves and ferns make the perfect flower-free bouquet. (The photo was taken by my friend Janis Nicolay.)

Think outside of the flower garden and beyond the vase for summer's best accessories. Happy clipping everyone!
