Question of the Week: Manual Push vs Powered Lawn Mowers -- Does Convenience Trump Green?

Grass lawns aren't great for the environment (I bow my head in shame having recently re-sodded my lawn.)  Opposing studies have played tug of war with lawn facts, with disheartening emissions studies finally neutering the argument that a grass lawn makes good by taking in lots of C02.  Apparently, lawns en masse can create up to four times the C02 than they're able to store, simply by being maintained.

That maintenance chestnut again...  It would seem that gas powered lawn mowers are at the heart of the problem. If we weren't so hung up on our homes not looking like this, then the C02 off-setting argument would have a chance.  But alas, we continue to manicure in the face of environmental doom.

There is, however, another way: get a manual reel lawn mower.

This can't be news. We ALL know they exist, and some us, like myself, have even taken a solid crack at making the switch.  The problem unfortunately arises when many of us, like myself, sheepishly switch back...

I tried (read: my husband tried), we really did.  We bought two different reel mowers -- neither worked well enough.  They got clogged, they matted down parts, which left longer tufts all over the lawn like a botched haircut, and let's face it: they require some serious physical labour!  We're not sloths, but all in all, the manual lawn mower did not prove to be a friend... We couldn't stick with it. (I know you're thinking rechargeable electric mower, but for some reason, my usually altruistic husband said it would be a pain too.)

Is this not at all funny? Are we reprehensible?  Before you blame though, fess up: how many of you lawn-lovers have made the switch to a manual reel mower?  And stuck with it?

Take a Poll!

Purchased a manual mower for our gallery and it is both convenient and Eco, the coolest mower ever. Works really well, and doesn't use gas.

Have a manual/push mower for small lawn at cottage...did a wonderful job on lawn and gave excercise for mowee. Problem occured when we started to feed the lawn...manual mower CANNOT cut long/ well fed lawn especially when if we are not there during the week to cut it. Unfortuately we are back to gas mower

We have both an electric and a push mower, we have used the push mower but because of the slope of our lawn (we live in the middle of a hill) it doesn't work out very well, so we predominately use the electric mower for ease.

I live in a condo. We recently had a landscaping company put down sod in an area that had always been Sub-Saharan. It was promptly returned to sand once again by the constant rain of acidic pee from large-eyed lap dogs. No wonder grass had never grown there.

But to your point, the push mower/gas mower question is moot (as suggested by the multiple choix questionnaire).

Lawns are a monoculture, and they discourage life. You've got to mix it up if things are going to live there. You've seen those freaky-deaky front yards with the cosmos flowers and questionable iron sculptures. That's the future - and you don't have to mow it.

And admit it, you've never actually played lawn darts. You just want the option.

I have a push mower and, to be honest, until I had the thing sharpened, lubricated and adjusted by a professional it was pretty difficult. Now it works well enough. The effort to actually push the mower (when adjusted properly) is the same as a medium to large gas mower. Time taken is the same.  Edges are much rougher, and tall weeds will bend and avoid the blades, but a good electric trimmer will clean up things nicely. The noise factor is much lower with the push mower (you can start mowing at 8 am on a Sunday if you want, though I can't recommend it.). (Also: Depending what town you live in, the pro who adjusts and sharpens the push mower comes by your neighbourhood, usually ringing a bell, in the late spring and early fall.)

We've had a push mower for 6 years and it's done a great job.  We've recently moved to a bigger property, where it is a necessity to have a bit more power, to save time.  But I would recommend a push mower to anyone who has a small property/patch of land to mow.,

Whatever you use, please make life easier for yourself and our water resources by leaving the grass clippings behind.  They are over 90% water and if not layered too thickly on your lawn, can be extremely benefical.

If you really want to green up your garden reduce your lawn and plant beds of natives and trees, along with homegrown veggies with companion plants.  Give the pollinators some love and reduce the amount of gardening/watering required.  Lawns are the HIGHest maintenance part of any yard and generally require the most amount of wasteful watering/chemical control.

Thank you! :)

Manual lawnmower, been there and done that.  Now I am sixty plus counting 'n counting 'n counting  therefore  I opt for gas!   As far as I'm concerned  my Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother (you get the picture) and I have already contributed  to the Green Movement as it is really NOT a new concept  that many would like you to believe.  The only difference is,   back in their time  (or mine) it was  not capitalized on nor an growing industry to make profit.

I live on acreage and mow my lawn with a push mower and have done so for the past 2 years. I also clip all my hedges using hand held clippers (they surround the acreage). Labour intensive but I like to do my part for the environment.

Just bought one a few weeks ago.  I have about 1/2 acre to mow.  I haven't put in sod or anything just mowing down what is there until I can turn it into flower beds.  I was asounted how easy it was.  Maybe not as perfect as the gas.  It had not been mowed in weeks and this new one from Canadian Tire it chopped it all up.  I have never watered it.  Around here we let god water our gardens so plants learn to survive.  Because it is quiet and there are no fumes I enjoy it much more.  I can get up at 6AM when it is cool and get it done and it is good exercise.  I don't have close neighbours so I crank the stereo... yeah 6AM and me and Louis Armstrong mowing the lawn...It's Wonder fulWorld!
