It's summer. It's warm... well, most of the time, the gardens are blooming, and naturally gardening culture is aflutter. We here on Style Sheet are no different; from how to create your own Al Fresco Getaway to how to personalized garden lanterns and even showing your balcony some love -- we take 'taking it outside' very seriously. But if you're like me, you poo poo the whole thing (cue the flying tomatoes) and take it inside! My condo balcony size is very limited so I look for low maintenance plants I can keep indoors, that look great and make feel like I'm doing right by all you green thumbs. As usual, I turn to our Flickr members for some great, low maintenance suggestions:
Hydro-Culture
Hydrosuccess takes advantage of this "hydro culture" plant that doesn't require soil and uses mineral nutrients in water. It is low maintenance but high in color -- this orange is a great 'pop of colour' if I've ever seen one.
Juniper
Ceki's belawi juniper at first glance reminded be of one of those beautiful bonsai trees. Though only a cousin to the bonsai (which can be expensive!) both dwarf tree/shrubs bring an air of serenity and are evergreen -- which to me means they keep on giving with little encouragement.
Aloe Plant
Aloe plants are always a keeper. A "succulent" plant native to South Africa, this is one of my favorites. The ultimate in self-sufficiency, they store water in their leaves making them equipped for survival in the most neglectful of households (mine.) T0fugurl kept it really simple by just dressing it up with a silver bowl and some white rocks -- clean, and perfect for a powder room.
