Question of the Week: Are "Dad Chairs" Extinct? Or Are Dads Still Sitting in Them?

La-Z-boy through the ages (clockwise from the top); 1950s prototype, TheBSReport blog; 1970s prototype, Morgan.co.nz; a contemporary suped-up prototype, JerkMag blog; 'Jason' rocker/recliner, one of the most popular models, WestDawson.com.

I'm a day late with this -- apologies.  Some of the team and I were painting a colleague's apartment yesterday (she was in dire need of a little condo beautification), with some hilarious results to come.

But back to the task at hand: Dad Week is here.  We thought originally we'd theme the whole month, but in truth, we're not sure dads have the attention span...

And so we welcome Dad Week with this question: Are "Dad Chairs" Extinct?

They should be.  Like all things designed for maximum comfort (The Snuggie, pajama jeans) they foster bad taste, complacency and dry up our life juices, hastening us toward the grave. (I still think it's Monday.)

My dad's never sat in a dad chair (though he's had plenty of apparel confiscated), mainly because he's been barred from ever making any decor decisions.  But if he had his way (or at least a son to tip the gender scales in our household) I'm pretty darn sure he would.

So while I'm inclined to dismiss the whole phenomenon as passé, my dad's rebellious outbursts against aesthetics make me think twice -- IS the Dad Chair still out there?  Or are we hanging on to a stereotype?

Take a Poll!

Comments:

Forget Dads. My partner sits in one of these regularly. He's only in his 20s, the chair was NOT a hand-me-down, and he refuses to get rid of it. Dad Chairs remain.

We gave one to my boyfriend's dad. It came as a set with a pre-loved sectional and My tiny condo was too small and my sister's did not want it.  I have bad memories of my step-dads Lazy boy that comes complete with phone, cooler and massage.

My boyfriend's father is in his late 70's and he LOVES his chair. At that age, the man deserves some comfort. A 30 year old with a gigantic reclining man chair.. not acceptable.

No dad chairs here. My dad is a dignified gentleman who wouldn't be caught dead in one. My husband would probably enjoy one but he didn't get one. I'm betting my brother will get one. He just became a dad and he and his wife watch a whole lotta sports.

my father has had the same chair for at least 32 years... it really resembles the one Elana pulled out f the trash except that my mom keeps making him new cushions for it...

Leather recliners are not my idea of style, but in deference to my 6'4" husband's bad back  and  desire  for comfort I sucumbed.(ouch).  After much searching, we compromised on a LaZboy in a classic style.  It was intended for our den, but when we got it home, it just didn't fit in and so it it is now in the living room. I must admit, anytime he isn't in it, someone else is.  It's so comfy!
