Splurge Vs. Steal Saturday: Toy Soldiers for Dad

Instead of a Bargain Saturday, this week I'm bringing you both a bargain and a huge splurge perfect for Father's Day (you only have a week to find that special something for dad).

Chandelier Creative for Partners & Spade 24 karat gold limited edition toy soldier set

When the press release about the 24 karat gold toy soldier set above arrived in my inbox, I just had to share it. It's a collaboration between New York-based Chandelier Creative agency and art boutique/ad agency Partners & Spade (Spade, as in Andy, the husband of handbag guru Kate) and the precious toy set retails for $500 or $125 per soldier. The set, which was created for Father's Day goes on sale today on the Partners & Spade website. There are only 100 sets available.

Don't want to tell dad that the gold soldiers are his Father's Day gift for the next 10 years? I found some cheap army men that would still look pretty cool on a shelf. The antique metal toy soldiers above are dated in the early 1900s and go for only $25USD from Blackthorne Antiques. (They're located in New Hampshire but will ship to Canada. Call for rates.) My favourite is the porcelain army man from BROOKLYNrehab's store on Etsy.

Camoflage and military inspiration on the spring 2010 runways and now this? I predict a trend, so hold on to those old plastic soldier toys. Who knows? By 2011, they could be collector's items!
