Question of the Week: What Would You Choose for a Backsplash? Tri-Coloured Glass Mosaic?

"Erez" tile by Walker Zanger

My neighbours -- the same, badgered neighbours who've been dragged all over this blog -- are nearing completion of their enviable first-floor reno.  The other day I was over there snooping, and saw a pile of backsplash tile samples laying on their brand new milky, quartz counter tops (gorgeous, btw.)  As I started to sift through them to offer my unsolicited opinion, Roma, my neighbour, cut me short: "I don't like any of those."

The said samples were all of glass mosaic subway tiles, in various shades and combinations of aqua. Though technically they would look pleasing against the warm, yellowy ash of the slab cabinetry (they chose slab over Shaker style doors!), Roma and myself found the option too boring and predictable

Recently I blogged about how I think the tri-coloured mosaic glass backsplashes are on the downswing of the trend, and though many of you disagreed, this latest incident proves that I may have been onto something.  But if not the trusty aqua glass, what then? If, as Glen Peloso puts it, backsplashes are the jewelery of your kitchen, glass mosaic was the perfect choice for so long to dress up any wallflower kitchen. But haven't you seen enough of it already?

I have, and have been branching out.  The "Erez" line from Walker Zanger (above) is what I'm coveting for my eventual (more like never) kitchen reno.  If you could have your way, what backsplash would you choose to dress up your kitchen?

Are mosaic glass backsplashes over? Take a Poll!

OOH!

Great question. I have been pondering backsplash options for some time now and cannot decide. Elana, I'm with you on those teeny little multicolored glass squares. I don't like. Overdone. How about, short and wide white glass tiles on a stagger? Marble? too many choices, is my issue.

Chose the wrong one.  Meant to say "Yes, it's so over."  They are so ugly.

I've never really liked the multi-coloured glass mosiacs... all one colour though is nice. What I'm really liking right now is the listello-type tiles of varying lenths and widths, off set, but on the vertical rather then the horizontal. They can be glass, stone, procelain... they're FAB!

My husband and I chose to go with tin ceiling tiles as our backsplash.  They were much cheaper than glass tiles and are beautiful.

Actually, I was going to do a post on the tin tiles as a backsplash -- good choice Jennifer.

I work at a flooring store and our top sellers right now are  glass and stone blends in not the standard square but multi sizes and lengths

Elana, I would love it if you do a post on the tin tiles. That's exactly what I have in mind for my backsplash & it would be nice to get ideas and what color to choose. Most importantly, which ones are the cheapest & how to apply.

Re Jenn's comment is good to hear as that is what I too was contemplating.   Though I do like glass tile I also  feel a little goes a long way, so in this particular case 'less is definitely more'.

I have 1x2 glass tiles on my backsplash and LOVE it!

They shine in the light, easy to clean when food splashs on them and to me they are worth every dollar.

We recently redid our backsplash and went with black glass 2x4 subway tiles. We were VERY pleased with the results. As CityGirl mentions they give shine, are so easy to clean, and hopefully the layout pattern is classic enough that we don't easily tire of them...

I used anaglypton (sp) paper horizontal on my back splash I then painted it gold and added additional shade of gold using a stencil brush to give the paper an old look.  To make it easy to clean I sealed it with about 4 layers of polyurethane in a gloss.  It looks line tin with out the cost and no seams except behind the fridge and stove.  People love the look and ask what did I use.  Easy to replace.

We recently bought a new house in the west end of the city and are considering using old fence slats as our backsplash - we love the warm look of the greying wood. I think it's going to be a charming contrast to the granite countertop (classic soft/hard visual interplay).

Any thoughts about the potential upkeep to this solution? We figure that if food stains become an issue, we'll just tear out the individual pieces and rotate them with the fence out back. Easy peasy.

Oh we'd love to see a photo Jason!

I love the Mizu tiles from Walker Zanger, in a subway pattern.  - Elana, do you know where you can get Walker Zanger tiles in Toronto?

There may be other stores but I know World Mosaic carries Walker Zanger, and I believe that they can order you anything in the catalogue.  Also, Walker's site has a link to all the retailers that cary their products around the world. World Mosaic is at Avenue and Davenport.  You can google it.  Great store!
