Pottery Barn summer place setting
I recently had the pleasure of a private tour of Pottery Barn and Williams-Sonoma's summer collections guided by Michaela Wilkinson and Suki Mulberg from the companies' head offices in San Francisco. And as far as tabletop and entertaining goes, both brands are channeling relaxed, summer settings, some featuring super convenient melamine dishes like the crab salad plates and platter below.
Potter Barn in particular looks like the inside of a cozy but luxurious cottage by the sea. Accessories like faux coral and shell-encrusted candles are mixed with rustic mason jar mugs and galvanized metal buckets.
Similarly, the furniture and accessories are still polished in that Pottery Barn way but with natural or rough-around-the-edges appeal. My favourites: the distressed, slatted rolling wood coffee table and summer pillows for every room of the house.

Get the seaside look:
- Look for natural materials or natural-looking materials like woven place mats — Pottery Barn's (in top photo place setting) are made of sustainable water hyacinth — shells and other sea creatures (you'll probably want to buy fake versions of these)
- Find pillows and textiles with texture: frayed edges, embroidery and natural beading
- Use rustic accessories like galvanized steel buckets and country favourites like mason jars for a charming summer table
