Question of the Week: What's In Your Garden? Show and Tell Us!

Images from season 2 of Dirty Business

This summer my boyfriend and I are attempting to grow green thumbs and start a garden from scratch. When Vanessa and I attended the President's Choice Lawn & Garden field trip a few weeks ago (see her greenhouse photo gallery), we got to take a lot of plants home with us (lucky, we know). I am now the proud owner of raspberries, strawberries, peppers, three kinds of tomatoes and a whole lot of herbs, plus hostas, geraniums and impatiens. We have a sunny plot that's about 6ft x 6ft, a shady strip for the hostas and the internet  -- including HGTV.ca's gardening how-tos, of course -- as our guide.

So my question of the week for you, Style Sheet readers is this: What's in your garden? Fruits and veggies? Flowers? Greenery? Herbs?

Leave your comments below, I look forward to joining the gardening conversation. If you want to show off your bloomin' garden (and you can bet that we want to see it), you can send us photos in two ways:

  • Email a jpg to stylesheet(@)hgtv.ca (don't forget to remove the () around @) with Garden Photo in the subject line. Please try to keep photos under 1MB.
  • If you're a member of Flickr, join our Style Sheet group and add your photo there.

Not much anymore.  I tried a vegetable garden but my husband mowed down half of it.  I had a round perennial garden but it is now an oval.  My husband likes his rider mower.  I am not as fond of it.  I was trying to create gardens without the added expense of having to define them with railroad ties or bricks.  Wimpy little fences are no match for a rider mower.  This year I might try "square foot gardening" (see book by the same name by Mel Bartholomew).  It looks like fun and one ends up with a raised garden without too much expense.....I hope.

As gardening is NOT my forte, two years ago  I opted for easy-peasy  maintenance taking my cue from Commerical  planting beds.  I used lots of river-rock 'n boulders , small  shrubs 'n evergreens  and flowering perennials.    For added color and interest I do plant a small variety of Annuals, however this year as the existing beds are nicely matured, I think I shall just restrict them to potted containers.

Best of  luck to you on  growing green thumbs.  Lord knows how I have tried, but  never have been successful.   :)

Oops, I forgot to include I also have an assortment of Ornamental Grasses which are extremely low maintenance but are really quite beautiful.

Saw Collin and Justin on Rona magazine and they were talking gardens and it reminded me I meant to write to ask where are they when I saw this? Love Home Heist and missing it.  What the guys doing next?

I have a huge garden in our new home but am way out of my depth! Trying not to let the previous owners' hard work be for naught! Anyone have any success growing bamboo? We live in Toronto. I would love to plant some this year.
