Question of the Week: Boring White or Walls of Colour? See Real Facebook Debate!

It couldn't have turned out better: I live and breath all decor/design/renovation concerns, and it just so happens that my next-door neighbours are extensively reno'ing their home.  I've aired out several of their real-life issues here on the blog (first floor powder room debate, kitchen cabinet debate), and yet again, their reno plight rewards me with a great discussion: white or colour on the walls?

Designers (like Sarah Richardson) keep pushing colour on us, but more often then not, they paint their own homes white or "greige".  Well, my next-door neighbour, Roma, took this reno roadblock to Facebook, which not surprisingly yielded quite the entertaining comment thread.

What do you think?  Colour or White? Take a Poll and leave your comments below!  Oh and scroll past the Facebook thread to find out what my neighbours actually chose to do...

And the final verdict is...White!  Are you surprised?

Take a Poll!

I'm with Jen. I have colour on my walls now, but my next house (for which I'm currently hunting) will be white on white on white on white. OK, maybe some soft grey - it's my favourite neutral. Good choice Roma and Steve!

I am LOVER of wallpaper, so my weakness is color(s) AND pattern, however with renovations currently on the agenda all walls are going to be  tailored dressed in plain shades of color.

Quitting 'cold turkey' is difficult, so 'no pattern' will be an accomplishment for me.   SMILES   -Brenda-

white looks like cheap, sad rental

@redd.

You'd be surprised. A really high quality paint with a satin finish looks incredible, fresh and clean, not sad at all.

@Jen, agreed! We should do a post about choosing the "right white"! Elana - put it on the sked!

I live in a condo. I choose a light shade through out the condo. A color is close to beige or something to make the white trim to stand out. And then I'll pick one or two wall to paint with a bold color, this makes it a focal point in the room. And then it will be easy to decorate around the focal point!!

I am loving the white walls. But if you really want a bold colour on your walls have a compromise and settle with one big coloured wall. It could be the focus point of your whole room. Be creative and have fun with it. Be fresh, lovely and add your personality in there!

I have an open concept dining room that flows from the living room to the dining room to the kitchen, I would like to put  a chair raile in the dining room with wains cotting but not sure where it should start.

Any ideas?

Steve, open concept rooms cannot have wainscotting unless you do the whole thing.  The only other option would be to try to divide your dining room off from the other rooms with counter height bookshelves.  Install them to your walls to make them permanent fixtures and add crown molding to them to add a custom touch.  I guess it really depends on the shape of your room.  Hope that helps!!
