My friends and next-door neighbours are renovating their first floor. Sidebar: it's not fun living next door to me because I'm ALWAYS up in your space, mining your home and private sanctuary for stories I can air out on the blog -- I'm a liability.
Anywhoo. Recently it was time for them to choose their kitchen and they wanted my opinion on cabinet styles. They brought home two samples: a Shaker-style door (example on the right) and a solid slab-style door (example on the left.) I sided with the Steve, the husband, in prefering the slab-style, while the wife, Roma, was undecided.
Actually, for me there was no question. I like to make as many decisions about the style of my space as possible, and the slab-style doors would leave me lots of room to play, ultimately making for a more original kitchen. The Shaker-style can be lovely, but it comes with a built-in, specific look that I would have to follow, which is frankly the reason why sooooooooooooooo many people choose it -- it's the easy way.
What I didn't know, but am not surprised to learn, is that the Shaker-style kitchen is apparently better for resale. The person at the show room advised my neighbours to go with the Shaker style because of this very reason.
Did you know this? I can see how this makes sense, as it has broad appeal, but would you be swayed more by a home with Shaker-style cabinetry over one with the more modern, slab-style? Have you heard this real estate trumour*?
*Trumour: a rumour with some confirmed truth to it, or one that has been circulated enough to be accepted as a kind of truth. Thanks to Marty Flanagan of Blogal, Globaltv.ca's recently unveiled and richly entertaining blog.
