Makeover: An Inspiring, Attainable Makeover from Pure Design

Carm and Jason's Living/Dining Room (before)

One of the things I love about the rooms Samantha Pynn makes over on her fabulous show Pure Design, is that they're not only beautiful but also really attainable — with a little hard work and some hard earned cash, of course. The beauty of what Samantha does is that it's often quite simple. She's just very good and pinpointing exactly what's wrong with a room and exactly what it needs to look bright, fresh and comfortable.

Carm and Jason's Living/Dining Room (after)

I love what she did with Carm and Jason's Living/Dining Room. The patterned sofa is probably something I would scoff at in a store and yet it looks cozy — not corny — among the other warm, cream-coloured furniture and accents in the room. Moving the seating from facing the entryway to facing the window and opposite the dining room seems like common sense, as does adding a focal point to the wall where the couch used to be. Without a master carpenter on hand, I might pass up the fireplace and just install built-in shelves or shelves that look like they're built in.

The dining room is an obvious and easy to fix disaster. That dining set is straight out of the ’80s and the walls are completely bare and a little depressing. The new wood table is a no-brainer — it's gorgeous —and I love the mismatched chairs. The lighting, art and sideboard just add much needed warmth.

Comments:

I find it too small a space for the furniture, and the bright accents.  I can't really SEE the room.

Hello. My wife and I bought our house about 6 months ago. It was a foreclosure and we were able to get a great deal on it. We also took advantage of the 8K tax credit so that definitely helped. We did an extensive remodeling job and now I want to refinance to cut the term to a 20 or 15 year loan.  Does anyone know any good sites for mortgage information? Thanks!

Mike
