Store Review: 29 Armstrong, Edmonton

Located in the Armstrong heritage building in Edmonton’s warehouse district, 29 Armstrong offers a glimpse of the cutting edge in contemporary décor.

Open since 2008, the boutique’s exposed brick and beam construction, high ceilings, and scuffed hardwood is an ideal backdrop for its eclectic mix of quirky-luxe, high design furniture, lighting and accessories.

A sense of humour and a real appreciation for the unusual appear to be a common thread throughout the store’s collection, proving that quality need not be synonymous with snooze-inspiring style.  In fact, 29 Armstrong's list of product lines reads like a veritable Who's Who of Canadian and international whimsical design.  Take local Edmonton designers Loyal Loot, whose bowls made of reclaimed/found tree branches delight with a colourful, Smarties-shiny interior surface.  I loved the etched, recycled aluminum Moroccan-style table by Roost, and Areaware’s marble and resin banana bowl as well as piggy banks.

A nice alternative to the ubiquitous Tivoli, Geneva Lab stereos (Switzerland) marry form and function with a sleek, speaker-size box which features fantastic sound, a port for your iPod and slot for CDs in one neat little package.

Interesting lighting? Pablo’s monolithic light columns create modern mood-lighting and if you like your floor lamps with a twist, check out Onyx’s Victorian-meets-retro-‘50’s Shine lamp.

Love this place but live outside Edmonton? Don’t despair.  Shipping is available across Canada (contact 29 Armstrong for details.)
