Top 5 Friday: Spring Trends According to HomeSense

This week, HGTV.ca's coordinator Camille and I visited HomeSense's showroom for a sneak peek at what they have (or will have) in store for spring. The showroom was set up into sweet vignettes representing each of the store's major trends and I can honestly say that I left yearning for spring and ready for a home decor overhaul.

Nature

The first thing I saw when I walked into the showroom was a table laden with gorgeous silk blooms. It was the perfect way to get me into the spring spirit. And that nature theme was carried through with bright floral pillows (top left), botanical blankets (bottom right), rose-shaped knobs (in bowls, top right and bottom left) and butterfly shadow boxes (bottom left).

Grey

As Elana reported in her Keep, Buy, Store for 2010 post, greige (grey mixed with beige) is an on-going trend and the neutral shade showed up at HomeSense both in true grey and in grey/beige mixes. I love them used together in a room with shiny hits of black and black-and-white art.

Retro

The Mad Men phenomenon hasn't just influenced fashion, it's made an impact on home decor, too. The fun colours used in these rooms are like vibrant pastels. They're not totally saturated oranges, greens and pinks but they're bright enough to make an impression. Look for retro-printed cushions and classic hat boxes to quickly update your space. If you're a little more committed, buy furniture in bold shades or repaint your own sideboards and tables.

 Nautical

Without fail, seaside and nautical influences come back each spring, and I for one, am all for it. I feel like it's a fantastic way to incorporate a little bit of shabby-chic or even that French country feel without going too sweet or preppy. At HomeSense, the feeling is less about harsh navy, white and red literal boating details and more about washed out blues and soft sand tones with white staples.

Exotic

Unlike seasons past, the exotic references for spring 2010 aren't exclusively Moroccan. The colours are brighter and the textiles bring to mind countries around the world from Guatemala to India. The plates on top of the shelf (bottom left) are a great way to add colour to open kitchen or even living room shelves and the pretty pink baskets (top right) could hold cutlery and supplies for a backyard feast or picnic. The mixed material poufs (or stools) would make very pretty occasional seating or footrests in an otherwise neutral room and I'd love to adorn my bed with the super cute bright pink and purple pillows (top right).

What do you have in store for spring? Which trends do you plan on incorporating into your home?

Comments:

I'm feeling a bit bashful as I send this comment. About 4 years ago I fell in love with the paint colour ""Greige"" it is just as lovely with chocolate brown as it is with black. I've had many people ask me what the colour was because they loved it. I think I just might use it again!!
