Photo Gallery and Final Trend Summary: Canadian Home Furnishings Market

Tenth annual Trends Display, by André Caron and Pierre D'Anjou.

The Canadian Home Furnishings Market wraps up today, and as promised, here's a hefty gallery of my favourite finds.  I also spoke with one of the two designers of the show's Trends Display -- Pierre D'Anjou -- a popular draw that shows retailers how to display merchandise in a contemporary context.  Here are the highlights of my chat with Pierre, and make sure to scroll down for the gallery!

Elana Safronsky: How do you get ready for the show?

Pierre D'Anjou: My partner and I go to the High Point furnishings market in High Point, NC, where you can find at least 70% of the furnishings that will be showing at TCHFM.  We choose what furnishings we want to work with, and spend the next several months creating the concepts.

ES: So what are the most important trends you suggest retailers communicate to the Canadian market?

PD: Well, modern is always where everyone wants to look, but the public in Canada is still buying more transitional/traditional style furniture. We are certainly more conservative here.  Small space design, while on everybody's radar because urban residences are getting smaller, is not really reflected in the size of the furniture on offer at this year's show.  Perhaps this points to the fact that a large portion of Canadians live in larger dwellings outside urban centres.

ES: What about colour - any sign of turquoise?

PD: Yes, but not in furniture directly. In accessories only.  Large furniture pieces are all still overwhelmingly neutral.
