Makeover: Basement Rec Room Turned Elegant Family Room

The dark rec room before and after the Pure Design team redecorated.

In the season two finale of Pure Design, Samantha Pynn and her talented team took a pretty typical-looking, dark, boring rec room and turned it into a bright, cozy, Hamptons-inspired space for mother and daughter Siham and Alicia, and their family.

How to get the look:

  • One really easy take-away from this episode, especially for basements, is the white brick walls. With not a lot of natural light, red or brown bricks are only going to make a basement look darker and a thick coat of white will really brighten the space.
  • The coordinating corn flower blues are very evocative of the kind of classic, sophisticated country style you'd find in the Hamptons. 
  • Stick to traditional patterns like simple florals and stripes.
  • Furniture made from natural fibres and materials lends a beachy, cottagy feel.
