Video Question of the Week: How Scary is Too Scary? Share Your Stories!

It’s funny, I walked around the office and got people to share their most frightening memories of trick or treating, and one story in particular seemed to come up again and again: “There was this one guy in my neighbourhood…”  Yes, that one person that really takes scary to heart, and frightens the bejesus out of the children. This person is usually – strangely – childless, most often a man, and most importantly decidedly over top on the fear factor.

What is it about these childless, friendly neighbourhood dudes that makes them the unspoken custodians of Halloween? Did you have one of these guys in your neighbourhood? Is there one scaring/scarring your children in your current neighbourhood? Are YOU one?

How scary is too scary when it comes to Halloween decorations and efforts? Share your stories!

Question of the Week appears Mondays on Style Sheet and on Food Network's Food For Thought blog.

My brother in law has had a scary tradition since he was in high school.  He dresses up as a ninja or scarecrow, wears a mask, and slumps in a chair by the front walk.  When little kids come up to the door he doesn't move, but when the older crowd (teens and preteens) shows up he moves just as they walk by .... always gets a good reaction

My stepfather built a full-sized coffin complete with scary dead-guy inside. Scary dead-guy had a retractable arm (made out of an old desk lamp with an elbow-like spring joint, with a glove on the end) that would pop out when the kids walked up. Kids had to go over and go over and grab their candy bar out of the dead-guys hand. It was my own house and I was terrified.
