Moving Mayhem: Bye Bye Wood Trim

So after much hand-wringing and poll-taking, we finally took the plunge and started painting all the beautiful old oak trim in our 1930s west-end home. I have a teeny video for you to see what the trim looked like before. Tomorrow I will have another with all of the trim primed. Next week, all of the painting should be done. We're using Benjamin Moore Cloud White Semi-Gloss. We're also doing the faux panelling between the plate rail and the floor (also painted in Cloud White) and hopefully that will be done next week as well.

The only snag I seem to have stumbled on is my choice of wallpaper. My designer friend Taisa says my choice will be too stark a contrast and that I need to choose something that won't be quite so stark against all the white that will be in the room. I was so wrapped up in my choice I'm having trouble moving past it.

I went to Waverly.com and saw a few that were nice but nothing I fell in love with.

ThibautDesign.com had the best search engine and Thibaut offers several patterns in fabrics as well, so you can coordinate accessories or chair cushions with your wallpaper.

I didn't like the search function at BurkeDecor.com but it did have some unique designs. They might actually be a bit too "out there" for me. Even though I had a firm deadline of this weekend to finish my dining room, I think I am going to take the time to order a few samples (including my original choice from The Wallpaper Company), to see what works and what doesn't.

I must say, though, even though we have just finished priming, we are already loving the painted trim. The room already seems brighter and bigger!

Stay tuned for more pics and video throughout the week!

You're my hero!  I have been at odds about the oak trim in my house for five years.  I hate the dark feel it gives to the room, but feel evil even thinking about painting it.  Anyhow, can't wait to see the finished product!

Oh, and I don't agree with your friend about your wallpaper.  I picture it with big, bold accents like a brightly colored couch or painted piece of furniture, bold rug, etc.  Also, check out this photo:

i can't wait to see this because i generally LOVE wood trim, but after recently using Cloud White Semi-Gloss myself, i might have changed my mind.

Yea You!! for taking the plunge and painting your trim!!!  I too have been gently trying to persuade my husband (for about 3yrs now) to get on board with painting the Douglas fir trim throughout the house.  It' makes the rooms dark, and dates the house.  Please tell me how you convinced your 'other-half' to let you do it??

Can't wait to see the final product.

KiminHalifax, I don't want to say I 'nagged' him but I gently told him that we're not losing the wood, we're enhancing it. It was a little easier for me because he generally doesn't like the look of wood in a home, he just felt guilty being the one to finally paint it after all these years! We also decided not to paint the trim around the French doors and to leave those alone as well, so we're keeping one of the nicest features of the house's wood, which made him happy.

Unfortunately, due to crazy family madness last night, I don't have the video of all the trim painted, but I promise to have one for my post next week! Maybe show him the before and after shots I'll post to help convince him! :)

Yay! I wanted you to paint the wood but didn't want to hurt your feelings. I bet it looks great!!
