Video Question of the Week: What Did You Splurge On in Your Home?

Just as I dilute the shab of my vintage jeans, a Value Village shirt and grandma sweater with a little designer bag, I throw in a $4,000 dollar custom dining room table to elevate the sea of pre-loved furniture cluttering my home. Well, I don’t just ‘throw in’ a $4,000, custom made dining table. I scheme, covet, plan, beg, fight, nag and submit preposterous payment plans for family discussion before hand, but in the end, I’m happy as a clam.

I love my Commute Home walnut and steel table. It’s exactly the right size and proportion for the room, and now I’m free to put any manner of shabby chair with it as it’s such a good looking specimen, nothing could ruin it. That’s what I call a good splurge. You rip it out from the rabid grip of a bad economy, and instead of bringing on the guilt, it gives back.

What made you loosen the purse strings in your home? And are you happy?
Funny; beds seem to be a big thing for people (see below)… go figure.

Question of the Week appears every Monday on Style Sheet and on FoodNetwork.ca's Food For Thought blog.

In my current postage stamp sized condo, I have splurged on nothing. It is furnished with Ikea things, mid century modern hand me downs from my downsizing relatives, gifts and things I found on craigslist or scrounged. Even my sofa was under $600 at a Leon's sale.

That being said, my boyfriend and I purchased a Loft conversion that we have yet to move into and there we have a number of splurges planned.. notably a 7 ft long stainless steel island on castors, 14 ft high wall length built ins (storage) and California style custom closets. All of our splurges are of the practical variety, after living in tiny spaces... there is no price I wont pay for functional/stylish organizational solutions.

LOVE the table Elana!

My biggest splurge was installing cork floors. It cost over three thousand dollars, but it creates a visual underline for everything else. The colour is described as "burl merlot", which sounds like the name of a game show host, but google it and you will see it does not offend.

I don't actually own a home yet, but this has'nt prevented me from splurging. In the event that I should one day become the proprietor of a 'dream pad', I have a ceramic, Fornasetti roman foot umbrella stand, bubble-wrapped and waiting. It is white with gold detail and fabulous. ...Come to think of it, I don't even own an umbrella!

Another floor point, we have raw concrete and are having it polished. In the end it looks like marble. We found quotes from about $5-$11 per sq ft in Toronto. I agree on splurging for good flooring, it makes all the difference in the world.

My biggest splurge would have to be my master bath.  When building and designing our home I decided that living in a home of all men required me to design rooms that were more tailored to appeal to a less feminine group or gender neutral.  I thought that I should have a space that would make me feel like I was surrounded in a famine luxury.  So I splurged on a claw foot tub, a chandelier and things with lots of sparkle.  I love walking into my bathroom and slipping into that tub and letting the day melt away.  Every person should have a space in their home that makes them feel special and mine is the bathroom.
