Do you remember that episode of Design Inc. where Sarah Richardson and her team made over that couple’s amazing condo in a “cookies and cream” theme? I’ve always loved that particular episode because the minute Sarah used that analogy I totally got the room’s aesthetic: cookies and cream, light and dark, each playing off of each other to create a delicious result.
I was reminded of this particular look when I checked out the Tastemaker’s Gift Lounge, part of the TIFF festivities going on in the city a few weeks ago. Previously, the space was a standard-issued boardroom at the Intercontinental Hotel, but was then transformed by PC Home using a light and dark colour scheme and a cozy vibe perfect for welcoming celebrities like Colin Firth and Ben Barnes.
My favourite piece in the space was the massive button-tucked ottoman (it retails for about $160). If you have a small space and need furniture that can work double duty, I think this particular one is a great find. The top actually opens up so you can store things like books, throws or other knick knacks inside and it’s large enough to use as a coffee table, additional seating space or an actual foot rest.
I also loved the table lamps that were used to create a more home-like feel. They featured a low-profile, geometric shape with stainless steel bases, which would look great in modern spaces or those that straddle between contemporary and traditional. Budget-friendly lamps have come a long way. You no longer have to be stuck with something that looks like you bought it at a discount.
The space was rounded out with decorative "objects d'art" like white-washed pine cones, simple white and transparent vases and paper birds strung from the ceilings at differing heights which gave the whole room an ethereal, light and sweet touch.
