After being fed a steady diet of Sex and the City, and subsequent reality-based fashion shows such as The Hills and now The City, I want to dispel something that many women and girls may hold dear: the fashionista apartment.
Kind of like the airplane-hanger-sized New York lofts that permeated the cinematic '80s, the "Fashionista Apartment" is the mythical dwelling of dreams for today.
What does this look like? A lovely Soho upscale walk-up with fashionable, quaintly arranged furniture and a huge closet.
Well, one of my dearest friends moved to New York City almost 15 years ago to pursue her fashion dreams. Today, many may agree that she has penetrated the upper echelons of the world's most deriding industry; she is a high fashion stylist who has worked with the likes of Irving Penn, Tom Ford, countless celebrities such as Hugh Grant, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears and Jennifer Aniston, and for magazines such as Elle, Vogue, W and V.
Upon my last visit to the city, I had me a good look at her real fashionista apartment. And while not the complete opposite of what the fictitious ones portray, the real thing points to a much more gritty, slightly less glamorous existence...
