Home Tour: A Real New York Fashionista's Apartment - Glamorous?

After being fed a steady diet of Sex and the City, and subsequent reality-based fashion shows such as The Hills and now The City, I want to dispel something that many women and girls may hold dear: the fashionista apartment.

Kind of like the airplane-hanger-sized New York lofts that permeated the cinematic '80s, the "Fashionista Apartment" is the mythical dwelling of dreams for today.

What does this look like? A lovely Soho upscale walk-up with fashionable, quaintly arranged furniture and a huge closet.

Well, one of my dearest friends moved to New York City almost 15 years ago to pursue her fashion dreams. Today, many may agree that she has penetrated the upper echelons of the world's most deriding industry; she is a high fashion stylist who has worked with the likes of Irving Penn, Tom Ford, countless celebrities such as Hugh Grant, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears and Jennifer Aniston, and for magazines such as Elle, Vogue, W and V.

Upon my last visit to the city, I had me a good look at her real fashionista apartment.  And while not the complete opposite of what the fictitious ones portray, the real thing points to a much more gritty, slightly less glamorous existence...

Fashionista or not, she's a slob.

Yeah - its kind of gross - seems like more of a clutter / cleanliness issue.

That's a huge apartment for Soho!  I too wish she would pick up a little, but I assume she doesn't spend much time there.

Here's another fashionista's NYC apartment experience:

Oh you guys...  Thank you, Understand,  for touching upon the key issue: she's WAY too busy to organize all that stuff, which is constantly in use, and there is no where near enough storage in that place.  It may look large, but it's dollhouse proportions.

As someone who lives, with another person, in under 600 square feet, WITH two very busy people requiring work from home space.. trust me. I "get" her disorganization. My closets, despite my best efforts, look like warzones at all times. -- but at least I have the luxury of three large closets.

I think its very charming.

working and living in the same space would be very difficult with such a small area. it's just as i pictured an NYC apartment to be... not sure if the cameras would fit, but i totally see the sex & the city vibe:)

I don't care WHAT it looks like, It's NYC..Soho no less and I'd give anything to live there. Everywhere else is well..not New York! I simply am enchanted with the entire city. Lucky for me a dear friend who doesn't mind having a frequent visitor does live there.  It's a bigger space than some I've seen..maybe she can hire a professional organizer.
