Moving Mayhem: Shopping at the Other IKEA Store

Shortly before we moved, the 2010 IKEA catalog landed in our mailbox and it wasn't long before I found it filled with pink sticky notes from my pre-teen daughter with all the items she was dying to have in her new room. Well, we've moved, and we've already made one trip to IKEA with more planned. How will my wallet stand it?

What I need to do is spend more time at the other IKEA store: Craigslist. If you're not familiar with this fantastic free classifieds website then visit it immediately. If you are, then you probably know the deals that can be had. It's especially good for finding only slightly used IKEA furniture at a fraction of the price. Before we moved, I went on looking for something or another and came across a large Hemnes dresser to match our new Hemnes bed. It saved me $120 off of what I would have paid new, it was in great condition, and I DIDN'T HAVE TO ASSEMBLE IT, thus saving my marriage another potential death blow.

Now that's we've moved in, I check fairly regularly for items that we know we want to get (such as the Hemnes black daybed, which is frequently sold out at the retail stores). Sometimes while you're looking for your item you come across other fantastic deals, so I have to be careful not to become one of those women on Hoarders, but how can I say no??

Right now I'm looking for a Hemnes PAX wardrobe system (for my husband's clothes) and any kind of linen storage system. We moved into a bigger house but actually lost a linen closet and I'm struggling to store all my sheets and towels. (They're still in bags.) Something like this linen cabinet would probably work for our sheets and towels. I'm just not sure if it will fit on the second-floor landing. Or this would fit, but I like it in the dark wood only and not sure we shouldn't have doors. What have you done to increase your linen storage space?

While I hunt for linen storage, have a look at my living room floor plan and let me know if you have an ingenious seating plan because I'm a bit flummoxed about what to do with the bottom left corner. Right now we have a piano there but I think it will go in the dining room. Currently, the large three-seater sofa is in front of the window and another chair is facing the sofa on the other side of the fireplace. I'm thinking of putting a love seat in the other corner but my husband thinks it will be a bit off on its own. What do you think? {Floor plan created at floorplanner.com.)

Comments:

I think a chaise lounge would look great in the bottom left corner of your living room floor plan. with a little side table and floor lamp, it could be its own little area without being too separate

If you have a reasonable amount of closet space in each room,  could corresponding bed linens be stored on a closet shelf? that leaves only towels to store......a cedar chest?? A small armoire?

I envy you.....I've been down-sizing for so long now I've almost  forgotten what it's like to furnish a large home. Enjoy!

Looking on a downview at your floorplan, I would put the 3 seater ont the right of the fireplace, the 2 seater opposite, coffee table in the middle to create a converation gathering area byt the fire. In that bottom left corner I would put the chair with a side table and a bookcase to create a private reading corner. (PS the piano could live in the upper left corner)

I "drew" my idea over your floorplan you supplied-I am not sure how to post it...

Hi Michelle, I added your floor plan above. I like what you've done. It's similar to what Megan suggested with the chaise lounge, and what I was thinking originally. My husband wasn't keen but I do like the idea of a separate nook for reading. We can always reconfigure if we have a lot of company over...

Perhaps you could add built-ins to the wall in the left corner, or a banquet with a table.

Oh yes... built ins on either side of the fireplace are a great idea. Has anyone ever done this?
