Video Question of the Week: Are Toilet Cozies a Crime?

When it came up in conversation during one of our team outings, I wasn't sure we were talking this century.  As far as I'm concerned, they're dead as a dodo.  But then, from the other end of the table came a humble, "what are toilet cozies?"

What we were talking about of course are the terry toilet seat shams and their matching rugs -- the ones that hug the pedestal of the toilet -- as well as anything to dress up an idle toilet paper roll and/or the toilet paper roll thingamabobber.  The fact that someone on the HGTV.ca team had no idea what they were didn't point to her ignorance, but rather to the fact that they're so passe, they could be made cool again!

So I took it to the street.  Surprisingly, I wasn't completely wrong, but not completely right either as most do find them appalling.  What do you say, is there anyway to make toilet cozies passable?  (One such example is this Hello Kitty set above.  Kind of cute?)

Question of the Week appears every Monday on Stylesheet and on FoodNetwork.ca's Food For Thought blog.

I'm curious about this claim of a cute hippo one from the video... But, I think they're gross.

If you have a 13 year old son, as I do, a crime, an offensive, unhygienic mess, not good.

p.s. I hope my sister in law doesn't read this - she would WANT that Hello Kitty set.

haha - I'm curious about the hippo too! Other than that, just say no to toilet cozies.

ICK!  I remember my grandma had her entire toilet covered in orange shag with butterflies glued on!  No way to toilet cozies!

Someone out there must like them, come on!

Elana, my guess is that those who do like & would use them are not frequenting a decorating site!!

(Another fad my generation has to apologize for.........sorry!)

yuck and not hygienic.

I'm old enough to have had one or two back in the 60's. I would not use them today. Not only are they unhygienic but they focus attention on the toilet. Why??? Cutsey ...thankfully...is mostly out of fashion. Today's styles are freer and cleaner. That is good.

Never have, never will be 'a fan' of cozies!

All this talk about being unsanitary, makes me wonder who is designing the toilets now?   What is the purpose for having a

sculptured toilet bowl base where more germs can collect in the crevices?   Give me sleek, for maintenance!

September 23, 2009 9:27 AM

ahh yuk! The only civilised solution is the Toto hands off toilet.

September 24, 2009 1:40 AM

YUCK! Wouldn't go near a toilet with one of those with a 10ft pole.

get a chamber pot ...for those nights too cold to get out of bed to pee . keep a lil pee bowl and cover under your bed to scare away the monsters .

Just plain tacky

There is nothing cute about a bathroom or toilet regardless of how you decorate them.  Cozies just make for more cleaning.  And I agree with mrsben about the silly sculpted toilet bowl designs which outline the pipes beneath.  My guess is the people who came up with those designs have never cleaned a toilet.
