Top 5 Friday: Décor Items I’d Like to Give a Rest

WARNING: The following commentary represents solely the opinion of the post author and is not intended to be taken personally, or out of context.  (I'm a little bit scared you're all gonna let loose on me...)

Vintage Ad Poster (at least the really over-used ones like the Martini & Rossi one)

I know they’re SOOOOOO tempting!  So pretty, so colourful so infinite and so affordable!  What could be wrong? Oh only that everyone on the planet agrees…  I have them, my parents have them, my friends have them and a few have even made their way to my Russian baba’s house (not kidding.)  Resist I say!  In the name of individuality, at least try and find something else that you can afford to put on your walls, and while you’re at it, try not to match the colours of your chosen piece exactly to the colour scheme in the room.  If you must go with the vintage ads, take some time and find ones that you haven’t seen at your neighbourhood coffee shop.

The Artichoke Lamp

A lot of the Mid Century Modern, Herman Miller-esque lamps could keep on keeping on by my house, as far as I’m concerned, but this one here is just the most tiresome sight of all.  It’s cool-looking and its artichoke-like fan of petals is an instant focal point in a smart, modern space, but I simply can not look at another.  I’m sorry if you have one and you really love it.  I don’t mean to offend.  It’s certainly got pedigree.  I just don’t want one – as per the headline of this post.

Tri-Coloured Glass Mosaic Tiles

This is a sensitive one.  I know that many, many, many of us have installed just that in recent kitchen or bathroom renos, and that’s ok (listen to me, as if you guys care, ha!), it still looks good.  What I mean to do is simply flag the fact that these tiles are no longer a ‘fresh trend’.  Glass mosaic tiles have been considered a ‘luxury’ product for some time, but no longer.  Tile manufacturers have caught on and many of your standard hardware stores offer the green, blue and beige colour palettes in the ready-to-go glass mosaics.  If you’re on the cusp of a tile reno and are considering this – reconsider.  You want to install something that has legs.

Buddha Heads and Pagodas

There are some nice ones, absolutely, but you know what they say to me?  “I’m worldly but I don’t have a single book on Eastern Art & Culture, nor am I any where near a Buddhist.”  Unless of course you have traveled there and/or are a collector or Eastern art and are, in fact, a Buddhist.

Beaded, Shelled, Faux Bois-d Decorative Balls

These things actually make me angry.  What are they?  I understand the impulse to put something pretty and precious in a pretty and precious glass vessel – I get it – but I also get a funny feeling in my stomach if I display an object that has zero design integrity what is so ever.  Those balls are made of Styrofoam that you can buy at your local craft store, and someone – possibly someone at an HGTV.ca craft day – glued to it some beads/feathers/seashells/sparkles and placed them just so, on the coffee table – objet d’arte, they are not.

Anything to add, friends (I stress)?

Oh my, I cracked up at your post. Maybe because I have a Decorative Shell ball sitting right beside me that I've been moving around the house trying to find a spot for for the past year. (Gift from my Mom, so I love it, but I don't totally disagree with the fact that it was a fad)

I totally agree with your other picks, perhaps except for the glass tile. I think that with this one, it's not necessarily the glass tile that has gone out of style, but the way in which people use it. (WAY too much). I don't see it going out of style in minimal uses, but maybe people should be paring back on grouting it everywhere.

I think you should also add to your list the Moroccan ceramic stools that you see from $200 in Boutiques to $50 at HomeSense. When it hits HomeSense....well, you know that the trend is coming to an end.

Fun post! ;)

HA!  Lindsay - I was totally deliberating between the ceramic stools or the Buddha heads!!  But you know, I shamefully still like those stools...

No argument from this gal...... though I admit to still liking the glass tiles, only in a more blended palette.....I really dislike those lamps that look like bleached corn husks in the shape of up-ended artichokes. Dustcatchers at best!

You would have LOVED my main bathroom in the early 70's.....one wall papered in a collage of Ad posters......double yuck. Small wonder I now prefer Vintage White!!!!!

you cracked me up with the line about your Russian baba... thanks for happiness!

Reni, she's got the Campari poster in her bachelor-baba pad!

Hmm.. I have a LOT of Asian inspired decor. A wood carving of Bayon, Ankor Wat that I brought home from Cambodia, some Apsara hand statutes, A Brass Door Knocker form Hong Kong, some Buddah prints i purchased in Thailand..  I thought it was ok as they are keepsakes of my travels. But.. I am not Buddist. Too much?  I do admit that I hate the poster/prints as well.. and the balls... But Elana! the tiles!! I'm not sure if I'm ready to give those up.

You don't so much have to give them up, just understand that what you are installing is super ubiquitous.  I like them!  They're just SO overused.

I can't stand traditional glass block. And old glass block looks yellowed.

I know I'll get a comment on this one...as much as it still so trendy, stainless steel applicances and/or countertops in the kitchen have got to go...I couldn't fathom comfortably cooking in a kitchen that resembles a morgue.  Especially using those industrial pull out faucets...they use those in the morgue too and I won't mention for what.

Great post!! I have to agree with the other posts regarding the tile, I still like it as well. But we are about to build a new kitchen and wondering what you would suggest to be something new and exciting for a backsplash?

Hi Michelle, if you can splurge, Carrera marble in large slabs is just the most beautiful thing... but it's very expensive.  I'm a big fan of the exaggerated porcelain subway tiles in great colours such as burnt orange or a mute robins egg (kind of like a dirty seafoam)  but if you're less adventurous with colour, you can go with gray or glossy brown.  By exaggerated I mean larger than regular subway tiles and at least 5 times as long as the width - 15"x3"?  You can find them in higher end tile stores or order them on line.  They're not that expensive but are considered a design item.  Also, I love the look of solid glass backsplashes. You can have the glass etched and coloured to any shade you like, or put an interesting wallpaper behind the glass.  The main issue here is finding someone who knows how to install it.
