'Tis the season of packing your kids off to school, and for many post-highscoolers it means off to the dorms with them. Well, I've one in the family -- my sister -- and thanks to her, I can tell you with absolute certainty, that these days --
see photo to the left -- are numbered.

Don't get me wrong. Virtually every university, especially the ones in small towns, are augmented by the standard barracks meant for first year's bleary-eyed and bushy-tailed, but first year is as far as it goes for many. Last year, my sister's first year, I clutched at my collar as I peeled my feet off the floor of her institutional, painted cinderblock cell, which insured that I almost faint at the sight of her 2nd year accommodations.
Well, I had to photograph it and share. I simply couldn't let the opportunity pass me by. I made the decision on the fly having accompanied my parents on the move-in day, so you'll have to forgive the less than glossy photo essay.
What you're about the scroll through is actually relatively common, and will become even more so in the future. It cost more than traditional dorm room accommodations -- $500 a person, a month -- but it's the way of the world... These kids these days are savvy, boy! Everything is done as if according to a well-oiled system; a home -- preferably a new build -- is scouted, amenities are negotiated with the landlord, roomies are drafted, furnishing responsibilities are discussed and divided, families are canvased for donations, and rent/vodka money is demanded and unequivocally received. Then caravans of parents arrive for the set-up, take an avalanche of abuse, watch as the girls cavalierly assume home, and leave their 'babies' to whatever will be. It's no longer the naughty naivite of Proky's (1982) that you have to worry about, but Melrose Place 2.0. And worrying is as futile as sticking frosted overlay to the girls' first floor windows, as one of the dads does in the photos below.
Enjoy!
