Moving Mayhem: Painting Wood and Brick

Last week I mentioned the debate raging in my family about whether we should paint the beautiful wood trim throughout the main floor and the wood wainscotting and balustrade in the formal front hallway of the home we're moving into. My 11-year-old daughter and our painter think this is sacrilege (there were actual tears shed—by my daughter, not the painter!), while my husband thinks wood, even beautiful wood, makes a room feel dark and heavy. I'm on the fence.

My mother always said you should never, ever paint wood and that little design dictum has always stuck with me. (Funny how certain things our mothers say stick in our heads. My friend's mother always told her, "Never smoke and walk at the same time, you'll look cheap.")

Our friend the house stager and designer, Taisa, says "Paint it out!" but I'm not sure I can do it. Painting wood is a commitment because it's damn hard to go back. Same is true for brick. The fireplace in our new living room is brick of varying shades of brown and one of the first things I want to do is paint it out with Benjamin Moore's Cloud White. So far no one has raised a ruckus over that.

Of course, the colour we choose for the walls will also depend on whether or not we paint the trim. A nice tan would look beautiful against white wood trim but if it stays dark we need to go light.

What do you think about painting wood? Will we regret it?

Comments:

I'm in favor of living in a home a good while before making any of these decisions.

In the end, it's your call......you know the house & the light you have in each room. How can we, who don't know the home, help you?

I think painting the wood (or not) would greatly depend on the style that you choose for the room. For example, if you went Spanish/Caribbean in style you could keep the wood and make the room feel large and bright. There are lots of different options out there for you, take some time and think it through, look through magazines and online photos for inspiration.

So many things come to mind that could help you make a decision - natural light, lighting, wall color, furnishings. Also, I remember a HGTV show where the homeowners were renovating a large family room. They had cherry red hardwood floors. They didn't have the budget to replace the floor. They hated it as well as it didn't go with the new decor, and it was too dark. They decided to use beautiful area rugs...it was a good solution. Best of luck :)  (PS. I'd also pay more attention to what your good friend, the designer, says. )

Paint it!!!

Paint, paint, paint!! I have had this same debate with my husband, who grew up in a "never ever paint wood ever ever ever" household. I like wood but feel its place is on the floor, the stairs and a few solid, well-made pieces of furniture. Truth is, I'd paint most of that stuff too if I could get away with it.

I was never one to paint wood either but finally took the plunge in my living room.  I was over the top happy afterwards with it and berated myself for waiting over 15 years to take the plunge.  My living room finally looks finished!

I'd paint it! Wood trim makes it harder for wall colours to look good with it; with white trim, you could pretty much paint the walls any colour!

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
