Home Tour: Classic Contemporary in Forest Hill, Toronto

Today's Home Tour is a good lesson in how to grow up. No matter how much we love frivolous splashes of colour, random objects as wall art and cushions du jour, there's something to be said for the classic contemporary look -- done right.  It's a bit like clothing: fashionable can mean keeping up with all the latest trends, or investing in chic, timeless cuts.  Well this here addition and interior overhaul in Toronto's prime real estate of Forest Hill, is the equivalent of the perfect suit.

Overseen and design by Leila MacDonald, principle of Schumacher Interior Designs (who, as you can tell by the photo, is herself a well-put-together lady), the project consisted of a large addition -- the living room/kitchen and second floor master bedroom with en suite were all part of it -- and interior design of the the new and other key areas in the 40s home. The whole shebang had an approximate budget of $300,000, which, I have to tell you, sounds about right (I've investigated a similar dream reno for my hovel, and it came to about that -- ha!)

The clients, a male gay couple, retained Ms MacDonald for her obvious way with the classics and a penchant for spend your money right (check out her site, it's pretty dreamy.)  The gentlemen gave Leila very little to go on, save for a request to keep it timeless yet contemporary ( I swear that makes sense in the world of design), with a hint of masculinity.

I think Ms MacDonald did a fabulous job, don't you?

It's a beautiful house, absolutely. The designer has done a wonderful job but don't these guys have any stuff?! A book? A plant? A freakin' set of keys? I hope that once these styled photos were taken, the owners moved in a little.

Being one of the owners of this house I can assure you that this is how the house looked when we actually lived in it (and not just for a photo shoot).  Actually these pictures were taken quite awhile after moving back into the house with our under 1 year old child at the time.  The only real change made for these pictures was to move the wonderful bright blue plastic Fisher Price jumper out of the family room.  The brilliance of Leila's design was that there was tons of built in storage so there was a place for everything (and yes we have tons of stuff).  This, in my opinion, is absolutely required to have a streamlined contemporary but classic living space.  Nik Nacs and clutter have no place in this kind of environment.  May not be possible for everyone but very much works for us.

Can you teach us your ways?  Because you'd want to stick a fork in your eye if you saw what my house looks like on a day-to-day basis...
