Contrary to what many may think, IKEA kitchens are not actually such a bargain. They're not because they're quite solid and good quality, in fact. I speak from experience, because today's feature is my own parents' kitchen reno, in which I had a solid hand from beginning to end.
"Before" (left), "After" (right).
We settled on IKEA because we really like the styles presented in the catalogs, because they make it easy and because they do cost less than custom kitchens. Just not as little as you may think. The whole of my parents' kitchen reno cost approximately $18,000. Not a big shocker, but not that little considering the floor and two thirds of the appliances remained untouched.
As you can see in the before shot (left), the kitchen cabinetry was that classic 80s melamine beige, with the wooden pull handles. The most prolific and arguably least offensive of the 80s kitchens, but still considerably less fetching in the face of today's chic trends.
Our Objectives
- Save as much money as possible, but style and aesthetics were to be a priority
- The floor had to stay
- The backsplash had to go
- The new kitchen had to work with the mid 90s faux "Tuscan" ceramic floors (not Terracotta)
