My love affair with New York City continues to grow unabashedly. On a recent trip, I was excited to cross the bridge into Brooklyn and check out the scene in Williamsburg. Its proximity to Manhattan, plus a 2005 change in zoning laws to allow more residiential growth, has made Williamsburg the go-to nabe for artists, musicians, fashion designers and all sorts of culturati who mingle with the area's original residents: Hasidic Jews, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, African-Americans, Poles and Italians. It makes for a great day of people-watching, shopping, eating and drinking.
My first stop was A&G Merch, a home decor store I heard about from a stylist friend of mine. It's the type of store I love due to three criteria: there's a wide variety in the types of merchandise for sale (from notebooks to furniture), there's lots of selection at every price point and the owners have a great eye for the unique and covetable.
We visited on a weekday afternoon and had ample time to wander. The vibe is eclectic and cool, mainly featuring products from independent designers -- if you buy something here, chances are your friends will demand to know where you got it. You'll find paper products, lighting, furniture and accessories like prints, pillows, candlesticks, dishes and housewares. Don't worry if you aren't planning a trip to Brooklyn any time soon: A&G Merch ships to Canada and you can shop online. Check out my favourites below!
